**** happens Peter, it makes us stronger!

I had an RS4, brand new, waited a year for it, 1 week after collecting white van man drove into back of me at 40mph and it was off the road for 8 months being repaired. On way back from collecting it again, a stone fell of a skip lorry and bounced down the road and landed right on top of the car putting a fist sized dent in it. The car must have been jinxed so I sold it not long after that!

Dodgy new car experiences... but we can't stay home for ever. Life's the living and Maseratis for being driven! Tempted to get up crazy early to drive to London this week instead of taking the train. It's joyful on a summer's morning, crackling and popping through the empty streets before the congestion charge is alive. The downside is coming back later when the roads are busy.

My vote remains. Drive.

I once collected a brand new Alfa I'd bought from Holland and drove it home that day. Fantastic experience, I'd definitely do it again.

Collect!
I bought my 3200 in Antwerp and it was a 200Km drive home that I didn't get to drive because it needed a cambelt service and I was not about to risk it.
Still, I regret not driving it back home and had it trailled.

Collect it. I made a 400 mile round trip twice to get mine (from the NE down to Stratford). Went down to look at, drive it and completed the deal, then drove down to collect it the following week. The trip down was poignant too in my trusty Alfa, the last journey I made in it...

Not sure why a drive back from collecting is any different to any other drive out. If you had it trailered down you could still get a stone chip in the first 50yds of your first drive but you wouldn't have had the 500 miles of enjoyment beforehand. Collect Collect Collect..

I bought my first Maserati in Inverness about 11 years ago, drove up in a Micra hire car and back in a 3200, stopped in Edinburgh overnight and back down with a hangover the following morning. Collect it!

Delivery is a torture I could live without, meanwhile the drive to the Dealer is very much enjoyable.

Collect it and enjoy the drive back. I went up to Scotland on the train to pick mine up and drove it back the same day. It was a long day but the 5 hour drive back went surprisingly quickly, even though it was wet and miserable weather to begin with.

Keep your wits about you on the way back though! As others have said there seems to be something about having a new car and objects trying to hit it. When i picked up my Golf GTi on the way back a lorry had a blow out and the tyre hit the front grille. Cracked the front bumper and smashed a hole in the honeycomb grille. Fortunately not expensive to repair but could have been much worse.

Then when i was bringing my Maserati back a bike fell off the roof of a car and i had to swerve to avoid it! On the same journey i also narrowly avoided a lorry rachet strap that was in the middle of the road. Either would have caused a lot of damage.

Without meaning to sound ridiculously sexist I thought my friend being a woman simply doesn't understand the 'male car' thing. ;) Clearly the general consensus is to collect...
OCD must be getting the better of me. Believe it or not collecting a new car is usually an apprehensive experience for me being worried what might be wrong! the phrase 'glass half empty' springs to mind!!!!
If anyone see's a blue Ghibli travelling north to south on probably the A1 at 40mph, you will have a good idea its me!
Thanks for all the responses, regards
Keith

But another question to raise here that some have pointed out - is how long does it take for you to get used to a car??

Within 5 mins I have the hang of it. What more is there to know? I am not on a track so I won't be hanging the **** out.

The question for me isn't to collect or not. The question for me would be who from here is local to where I'm collecting my new car and can show me some of those great Scottish driving roads! And have a day or two of it!

I know what you mean Hoyin, but have you ever had a Merc 600? You couldn't operate every feature in that car inside 30 minutes, let alone 5! I've flown aircraft with considerably thinner instruction manuals.

I think it also depends on your start point. I figure it took me at least 6 months to get used to the CC box

But then I am a bit rubbish :)

If the car is being delivered to Scotland surely its going to travel past you on the way up - could they not drop it off elsewhere?

Pick it up, I drove to Glasgow from Manchester to get mine last year and came back late at night in lashing rain which was nerve racking at first but meant I got used to the car and enjoyed that first long drive.... if getting a hotel paid for as well then make the most of it :)
