Custom Exhaust from Prospeed

Yes - another thread about exhausts...!

I thought it worthwhile to mention a very interesting conversation I just had with Charlie at Prospeed Exhausts in Cardiff. After some useful advice from Connaro and Maser Sod, I called them and I think this is the solution I'm looking for. I have a 4200 and am looking for a nicer sound - not too loud, but nicer and a little louder than stock. I also like the idea of a better flowing and lighter exhaust system meaning the car should be a little more responsive - though that's not the key driver for me.

What Charlie said was that for my 4200 he would do a pretty much complete new exhaust system - including sports cats (though leaving the pre-cats as stock) an H or X pipe (to be decided) and a new back-box. Importantly, this solution would give me the option to have some input into how I want it to sound - though of course that'll be somewhat subjective. Also, a key benefit for me is that it'll mean that should I not like some element of the sound, they'll be able to go back and tweak and change it later.

Oh, and it's also of the order of £1200 all in - so a lot cheaper than a Larini set of equivalent parts.

Does anyone have any experience of custom exhausts compared with the off-the-shelf Larini items? My only concern is that somehow I'm getting an inferior product. Though my hope is that I'm getting something as good (or better) and what I'm saving is simply the huge markup the manufacturer makes on Larini branded items.

I'm pretty sure I'll be taking a trip to Cardiff in the new few weeks, so will report back as and when as to how it goes.

Cheers,
Ben.

Hi Ben, ensure they use the superior quality S/S to make them, reduces resonance and last even longer

I buy thin walled stainless steel tube in both 304 and 316 grade almost every day working in the food and soft drink industries, and the cost of the tube either grade is almost insignificant compared to the total cost of a larini system. For example, I can buy today 3 inch tube 1.6mm wall thickness, in the superior 316 grade, dull polished at £100 for a 6m length, which should be plenty enough for any car!

That's what has to date put me off having Larini's fitted. Knowing what it cost me at ProSpeed for the sports cats and centre section - then having to multiply that by a factor of 5 or 6 to get the Larini equivalents bought and fitted.

I'm not saying I won't get the latter done, and that they aren't better; but I really struggle with the VFM thing!

I spoke to Charlie about a year ago and he is very knowledgeable. They can make almost anything for you...You tell him what you want and the sort of sound you want he can probably do it.....

I can also vouch for Charlie. I have a custom Prospeed system - sports cats, resonators and pipes from the pre-cats through to the back boxes. Car has noticeably more pep and sounds meatier, but also restrained.

Also, can't fault the after sales service. I had an issue with a pre-cat afterwards that may or may not have been connected with the original work. Charlie replaced this f.o.c no quibble. Don't expect a plush reception area, but you will get a great system from someone who knows his stuff and is a really nice guy too.

Black art exhausts, I've never understood how these guys can guess what a car will sound like before they so much as bend a single pipe. When you find a good one they're worth keeping sweet with plenty of business

I had a good chat with Charlie before I opted for Larini - He seemded good guy with excellent prices, and v good reviews.

I did a bit of exhaust "research" FWIW - apparently it's not just about a mark up on the steel + labour - R&D time can be asn advantage of a "standardised" product designed for a particualr model as diffent designs evoke different levels of back pressure - apparently there is an optimal level to give the most horses

As a comparison it would be interesting to see what Charlie would charge to replicate like for like for a larini styled system.............................may not be ethical but as said as a comparison

.... (oops)

According to Larini they have also spent a LONG time tuning the sound - I must admit, I thought they sounded better than anything I'd ever heard - and with that, as all things in life, you have to pay a premium for the "best" (or anything that claims to be the best) that's disproportional to everything else, even if it's only 10% better.....

Another consideration is possible resale - you'll defo get half your money back on a Larini system;you can chuck the old exhust back on at trade in time- worth remembering when assessing the "true" price.

Having said all that, the sound of an exhaust, like music, is subjective or course! Prospeed will definitely be a better bang for your buck. Ultimately, I chose Larini as I'd had a ride in Loz's and almost wet my pants :)

Ok - so I'm all booked in for 7th December! Will be quite a long day - they asked if I can get the car there for 9am - but should be well worth it. And the drive home will hopefully be good fun.

Will let you know how they get on.

Cheers,
Ben.

Thanks Simon - I'm looking forward to it too!

I would have gone with Larini - they were spot on in my opinion except for the critical factor of the noise level at idle - far too loud and boomy for me! And a valved system didn't appeal - even if it resolves that problem perfectly I don't want to have to be pressing buttons to get the sound in the right mode when I'm switching from "hooning" to "leaving the house quietly in the morning" modes and vice versa.

Cheers,
Ben.

Good luck Ben.

The car may pong a bit on the way back from the new cats + welding, don't worry too much about it!

BTW, I accept Larini's R&D cost puts the price up somewhat, which I see as fine for the GranTurismo tubes but why a premium on exhausts for a car they stopped making 4200's five years ago!

Flat screen tellies don't cost 4 grand anymore!
