Used to have this on the 156 / GT going over speedbumps. The 4200 is doing something similar at low speeds. Bushes? Something more sinister?

Cheers

Check play on the front lower ball joint. This has to be done with the wheel off the ground as otherwise it is under load.

Thanks, Bill. Would that make a noise seem to come from the rear? I know these things can be bizarre.

Well, in terms of soldering, it's a joint which has not reached sufficent temperature for the solder to flow properly. They can look good, but have intermittent performance.
For these kinds of things, I'm expecting the rubber bushes to have dried out (the chemicals which make tings flexible tend to evaporate) and thus you get the dry and creaky nature :)

There is a plastic part separating the wishbone from the actual ball of the joint. This actualy wears ant the creaking the metal to metal contact when it moves
