Check Engine Light

Hi all,

Today I went to overtake another car - put my foot down to get past and then about 1/4 later I got the 'Check Engine' notice and the amber engine light. I crapped myself and pulled over (not sure why but I did) - Set off again slowing home just incase but couldn't really notice anything difference with how it was running etc. I am really worried now - are there some tests I could do without any equipment to pinpoint the problem or does it need to be plugged in? Is this warning light a common issue with common reasons behind it? Can it be reset?

I have turned the car off and back on again - the light and error is still there.

It a 2009 Granturismo 4.7 S Auto

Thanks

It could be 101 things but alao nothing more then a sensor glitch.

A generic OBD reader may give you a code and a clue. I have one in Bristol for just that purpose and used it just once in 14 years of Maser ownership.

Probably mix too lean on bank 1 (or 2) or something like that. I used to get those when I'd let the petrol tank go almost empty.

It's only an amber! It's the red ones you need fret about!

Like Safrane said, but I cheap generic reader and look up the code and if it's mix or too lean or similar clear it and light will go off. If it repeatedly comes back it would need further research...

Possibly Cat Converter problem. I sometimes get a warning on one of the banks especially early on morning before everything has warmed up.
Last time it happened (a couple of years ago) a dose of Catclean or similar sorted it
An OBD will give you a clue

I have just plugged her in and got this message (attached)

I have cleared the code - took for another test driving (giving it some wellie!) - It hasn't come back on...yet

That's good news. Probably the least worrying code you can get, could be the Cat, could be the rear o2 sensor, could just be a spurious one because you gave it the beans.
Enjoy the car and don't worry about it unless it comes back.
