Changing plates

As my QP is regged in UK (on NI plates) and I work in Ireland and have car with me (insurance ok) I am covered by temporary residence rules in Ireland since I still have my UK address and am working here temporarily, ie not fixed employment. That lasts for 12 months I think, and my contract here ends after 11 months so I'm covered. However I'm in the process of negotiating another that might keep me here a year or more longer.

So, I've never been stopped by the Gardaí or Customs other than at the Port, getting more frequent, Brexit factor, and when I was searched for guns and drugs East Wall area after Hutch-Kinahan event.

I was thinking of swapping my plates to potentially buy another 12 months, since they won't know my VIN etc, only plate, question is when I do that (have plate already and DLVA doc thing and fee paid) do I loose my NI plate or do I keep that, or do I need to reserve that in some way? I just like it, it's not a great number, just bit slight better, KXZ 4221 different, bit attracts no attention.

I'd switch back for another 12 months!

My garage guy says I won't need to do anything as it will stay with my car until car scrapped - is that not correct?
Maybe get in touch with DVLA as I'm probably out of touch with things in the UK if things have changed.

It will only keep the 4221 plate if the car was originally registered on it. It is normal that the plate is held but not guaranteed. If you bought this as a private plate then you would have to retain at £25 per year last time I looked.

What's originally? Car was first regged in the the Republic, as 06-WD-3 (Waterford) then to NI then on a plate something like CBZ400 the dealer had, and when I bought it they kept the plate and it got KXZ4221. Dealer did that not me.

I don't mind paying, just wonder what I have to do! Looks like retention is the answer....
