Cars in the financial doldrums that we should embrace now

I completely agree with some of the pre mentioned choices.
A mk 1 Audi TT sport ( the one without the back seat ) I think is good value, a low mileage mk1 mx5 1.8 as well. Cars which when they came out changed perception of design or drive .
Also cars which people had posters of on their wall, that desire to own always stays into older age.
Cant go wrong with a 996 porsche or a manual first gen R8 v10.
Megane R26 ? Bmw M3 evo? C63 Amg?

The Jdm scene is hot right now and long may that continue ... I’m not biased at all (see profile pic ;)) but I still miss my GS.

I think the terms of the challenge are now pretty clear. And as OP pointed out... Just about everything JDM will not make the cut as it has all appreciated.. Even my suggestion of 300zx tt has nevertheless increased a bit the past few years. Basically no JDM will pass muster here except possibly for the R35 GTR... Problem here being it is nestled too high for sub 20, and too low for sub 50.

One of the main factors here will be age of vehicle. Lets face it, how many 60s and 70s cars would now meet criteria of 'fully depreciated.. And ready to head north'. None... They've done this a long time ago.

So you really need cars at a certain age too. I think XJR and XK jags from early 2000s in the sub 5. Late 90s merc R129 SL are probably at the trough now.

Merc SL500 from mid 2000s... perhaps these scratch in to sub 10. I'd reckon porsche 997 might be near the bottom of the curve... 996 have long since shifted up but maybe late 997.1 CS2 and early 997.2 GTS in respective price points.

Audi RS6 wagons in sub 20k if you're lucky?

Excellent post idea. I have been resisting mightily the urge to start a "coulda, woulda, shoulda," thread. At 62, I have let go way too many great cars, I can think of 5 that if I still owned them would be a million $ collection, and all bought cheap.

I really have no knowledge or appreciation of TVR. I presume the chimaera and griffiths and cerberas would be near maxed out on depreciation?

IMHO a good 4200 must be on the list; they are simply ridiculous vfm, as are cared-for QP V's. So too is the 3200 if you can live with the spares situation.

Yeah totally agree after two 4200 it would be a QPV now for me.

Having worked on a few over the years very well built cars with one of the most ingenious security devices too with locking the ignition in gear.
Not the prettiest rag top though.

Not only that but even if a car thief had the keys, he wouldn't be able to start it.
Ignition in the centre console. Genius!

I don't know about the Chimaera and Griffith but Cerberas are well past the bottom and back up again.

Rules stated 4200/GS not permitted but yes, they are very good VFM. Not sure they will rise though, especially 4200.

3200 has been cheaper in the past has it not?

In order of price.

Mk1 TT. Worst thing that’s ever happened to car interior design but I think they’re a blob shaped bargain at the mo. If you could find an early one that didn’t get the mods I reckon it’ll be worth a bit in 10 years.

MkV Golf GTi - don’t like them, Renault did it better but I think they’re going to be a “classic”

Renault Alpine GTA Turbo. The Le Mans and 610 are already expensive but a nice GTA I reckon is a good buy.

QPV

Lotus Evora 2009-11.

Interesting thread! I remember when Renault Turbo 2’s were at £12k and I just could not raise enough to get one - now at £80k! Again not as investments but just to be able to own one for a while would have been nice....

GS’s seem an amazing bargain to me at the moment. Another car I would like to have for a while would be a Mini GP2 but my knee might put a stop on that....
sold mine for 11k... Sold my 50k mile mint 930 turbo for 16k 7 years ago too so my crystal ball not too clear either. will have a think though

Far from it bizarrely. Many are over priced IMHO. Most of the Cerbera's and T Cars are high prices already. The Chimaera is the best value and arguably the most reliable and most.cost effective to run. The late Tuscan S and Sagaris prices are a bit silly IMHO.

There will always be 'cheaper' examples, but after discounting the dogs I think the best 4200's and 3200's still have potential, and these are looking good as well:

BMW 6 series might fit the bill, and if you could live with it there's this:

What supposed to be wrong with the TT interior? I think they're one of the best put together interiors of the time.
