Brake Pad replacement - to shim or not to shim?

Hi forum friends, some advice please.
This weekend I've been refurbishing my alloys whilst waiting for the headliner to be relined.
With the wheels off I decided to replace the rear pads and bought some EBP yellow stuff from an Aston owner who hadn't got round to fitting them.
The caliper was the 2 pin version without additional centre bolt and the pads had the additional shim plate.
I've reused the shims and a smear of copper slip but before I put the wheels back I'm now after some advice whether the shims are required.

Thanks

Grease generally does the same thing. It's primarily about noise. Can help with heat transfer. Doesn't really do much for braking performance, per se...other than the potential heat sink, which again grease can do. Unless you're tracking the car...

Thanks you for the reply, so reusing them as they were in good condition won't do any harm,
I noticed a new set don't include the shims either
