In the village we have a so called social housing area, filled mostly with northam European immigrant's blagging it!
I know I shouldn't say this...

They caused all sorts of problems, vandalism, breaking into cars and stuff

There's a old circus family down the road who has lived here for nearly 70 years, apparently they use to winter here in the off season

Cut a story short, a few of the young guys went up and really kicked the shite out of them!
That was 7 years ago, not a peep since!

Whenever I hear stories like this it reminds me of that line from Pulp Fiction - you dont **** with another mans car - or words to that effect
Bring back the stocks for these scumbags

It’s times like this that a quality hard wired dashcam that is motion activated may have at least captured some footage.

Unlikely someone is going to travel a long distance with the specific intention of breaking into your car, only armed with a screwdriver or such. So unfortunately it seems more like a vindictive local vandal. There was nothing to gain even if they forced it open, so now looking for a vindictive local vandalistic idiot. Nothing like this happened before, locally ?. If not, it might be something personal. Have you recently ** off the local vindictive vandalistic idiot. The trouble with this sort of thing is that it may be repeated after you have carried out the repairs. Hopefully you reported it to the police, it really pisses me off, I really s feel for you.
FWIW, I agree. Sounds like an opportunistic addict looking for some easily disposable electronics, sun glasses, or whatever. Definitely local. Not a guy with two brain cells, judging by the method of attempted entry. Not a vindictive act though. If it was that, it'd be far easier to pour paint stripper or similar over the car and/or slash the tyres.
This person wanted 'things' for himself. He didn't wish to ruin your 'things'.
