This seems a very vague, almost forgotten period, as a complete newbie to the Maserati scene....can the forums more experienced/older members give us a model by model account of what the mid-eighties onwards were like up to the introduction of the 3200?

What was thought of each model, how well did they compare, problems and what they were like to own.

Thanks,

P

Frank it was a mine field for model variants!

I believe during the 1980's there were at least 30 different Bi Turbo models to choose from at any one time, by 1994/5 they came to their senses with the Ghibli only 4 or 5 through out its production life.

I will endevour to list them all when I get time.

It appears they'd lost the plot......the range wasn't big....but so many variants.......God knows how you'd find parts now when so few were made and scattered across the continents!

It is a mine field Frank...I loved them but got into Maserati when the Bi Turbo Spyder came out and the 222. 24v....Befor ethat there was a million different types...I think it it had a 4 number in it then it was a 4 door it it had a 2 number in it then it was a 2 door.

P.

I have a Bituro Spyder and a Ghibli. The Spyder has a 2.5 litre engine with carburettors and pulls like a train until the turbos kick in, then it's like a rocket for all of a few seconds until the turbos cut out due to the automatic performance control. The Ghibli has the 2.8 4 valve engine, with electronic engine control. It's not on the road yet, but the engine sounds sweet.

The first Biturbos had a 2.0 litre V6 engine and the English version a 2.5. The 2.5 was succeeded by the 2.8 in about 1992 and later the 4 valve engine.

Various different configurations were available

2 door
4 door
Spyder

2 door variants were mostly prefixed with 2 and 4 door variants with a 4.

The engine variants 2.0, 2.5, 2.8 along with 3 valve and 4 valve variants.

So, 425, 228 etc are pretty easy.

But, then theres the 222, 430, Karif, Spyder and Ghibli which are not self explanatory.

The 1995 onwards Quattroporte is mechnically the same as a Ghibli.

And then the 3200GT, which is similar in many respects to the Biturbos.

I remember the reviews of the Spyder......You had to have your witts about you to catch it in the wet.......Lets call it challenging.

Hi Enzo-

thanks for that!

"tell us a little more"... Hmm... what can I say;

My name is Jim, I'm 38 and I live in Edinburgh. I've been a Ghibli Cup owner for 9 years and I believe I have the only one in Scotland. I own Chassis 209 which is the third last one made.

Following a few years of not really using the car much, it is currently in for belts & tensioners, valve clearances, plugs and mabey a bit more with M&P Supercars. Following this Spring-Service, I intend to attend Stanford Hall this year. It would be lovely to meet some more of the family...

As Enzo has said, Stanford Hall Auto Italia will be popular this year, be great if you could make the trip down.
