just been shown this by my E46 M3 buddy at work. 
Car enthusiasts embrace the quirks in a car. Those idiots at porsche insist on fitting the engine backwards - resulting in them becoming uncompetitive in racing. Nobody cares, especially now that air-cooled ones tripled in value. I would have another one again, if they were still 10k. takes a little bit of commitment to learn to drive in sympathy with the characteristics.
The people while dislike the DS gearbox clearly like a soft , comfortable undemanding ride. The few of us who appreciate the DS might also enjoy some "intensive indoor gymnastics".
