bugger me, someone actually paid 206,000 dollars for a replica:confused:

I get what you are saying, but it does look extremely well done, and that's probably less than it cost to build.
But its such a lovely looking thing and I think even if you could get someone to sell you one of the (3?) originals it would probably have at least another zero. Not even sure how many originals are still surviving.

totally agree that it's a great bit of engineering and probably cost an arm and 2 legs to build, but I just cant get by head round why anyone would pay that sort of money for a replica, there's so many nice classic genuine motors you could buy at that level, can only assume it's someone fairly wealthy but not wealthy enough for an original, imagine the disappointment when you have to tell people lushing over it that it's actually a replica;)

All very true! A question I imagine the new owner will most certainly be avoiding ! Similarly to when I thought I saw a Ferrari 250 SWB, and after a quick reg check it turned out it was infact a BMW Z3 :conf: (In my defence I didn't hear it running, as that would be a dead giveaway!)

I had a faithful recreation (replica) of an Aston Martin DRR1 - only 6 real ones ever built and one sold for £17m or something equally silly.

But I did have to explain to just about everyone that is was not a real one which did get tedious.

On the other hand a mate of mine has a genuine 427 Cobra and has to spend time convincing people it’s genuine as everyone thinks it’s bound to be a kit car !

a few reps seem to be worth the money and even been known to rise in value such as Lancia stratos and ford GT40, which tend to range anywhere between 30 and 70k, anything over that in my opinion is simply crazy for a replica car

I can see that happening a lot on the cobra, there are simply too many cobra replica kit cars out there, must really cheese your mate off

At a Sparkford breakfast meet a while back a gentleman parked his F40 behind us. As the driver got out, a couple of yoofs said "Nice car, is it real or a replica?" The gentleman replied "I don't think they make replicas of these" before he strode off.

They didn't ask me if the QP was a replica - should I be offended?

Depends on the DNA of how they are built. The very word "replica" meaning "an exact copy" of something so maybe replica is bantered around too much willy nilly in the car/kit car world. I like "recreation" much better.
