I never really understood why it made your insurance cheaper having your wife/partner down on your insurance, it doesn't make the chances of car damage or person injury less likely to happen. Or was it the view that women generally drive slower and are more careful than men??!!

It's based on many statistics collected over decades of data and something of a dark art. Of course, in these modern times, you couldn't say out loud that women drivers are slower or are more careful but i'm sure that the insurers still use these sexist stats in their algorithms. Maybe the Me Too campaign is actually a double edged sword in some ways! :)

I think part of this comes down to if you are on a long journey and it is yourself only driving then you cant share the driving if you get tired. Until recently the discount was there for any other one named driver.
It might be coincidence but this situation started just after (and this is from memory) someone in a Landrover defender and trailer fell asleep at the wheel and went through a bridge and landed on a railway line and a train was derailed and there was at least one fatality. ( I may be making some of this up!!)
In his trial part of his defence was that he only had insured only driving and couldnt share the driving when he got tired. (That bit I do remember)
It was just after this the one named driver discount came in as up to that point Insured only was the cheapest option.

Seem to recall a campaign to have Insurers rate men and women the same for life assurance and pension annuities.
They said it was unfair women got less of a pension annuity because they lived longer.
However they forgot to highlight they got cheaper life assurance because they lived longer.

All pretty bizarre. having shopped around and doing the deal over the phone with E sure, it is £50 cheaper to have my car sitting overnight on the street than on my drive!
Excellent point. However isn't it more likely some random ned will scratch it
That's because thieves don't know which door to kick in for the keys so less chance of theft , but if it's stolen off the drive overnight they'll be asking questions before writing a cheque out
Ah, good point! I guess this trumps a random ned just keying the car as he passes by!

I never accept what Admiral quote first time around. I have been using them for 3 years now and every year I have to get into the negotiation ritual. Usually results in a 30% reduction sometimes more. They always appear cheaper than the rest.
