I recently bought a Space saver for my 4200 from a very kind member on here with jack and compressor. I also recently bought a R230 SL which also had a space saver fitted. I am aware of previous threads about fitting an SL or SLK wheel to a 4200 using spacers. I thought it may be interesting to some to compare them and post some pics.
The standard specification for a 4200 wheel is: Centre Bore: 67.1; 5x108 wheel bolt pattern; M14 x1.5 studs; ET 52. The R230 SL is: 66.6;5x112;M14x1.5 ET30-35.
The space savers however are: 4200: 68x17 H2 ET-38.8 and the SL 68x17 H2 ET25. That would mean an ET difference of 65mm, which is quite significant. Both space savers have 185/70/17 identical tyres.
A friend gave me a space saver which he said fitted his QP5, although from a different car. The QP5 standard wheel details are details are: 67.1; 5x114;M14x1.5;ET52. Hence the wheel he gave has a different bolt pattern to both the 4200 and SL.
I had been thinking I could use the 4200 space saver on my 575, although the 575 standard space saver is 125/80/17.
That would make the height is 24.9 and 4.9 wide compared to the 4200 wheel of 25.7 and 7.3. the bolt etc is the same but the ET is out by 10. I haven't tried it yet on the 575. I will be asking on their forum if anyone tried it as yet.
I appreciate the views that no one has had a puncture etc. I was up last weekend on part of the NC 500 route and had a puncture about 40 miles north of Ullapool. Luckily, It was near a car park and I had a full size spare in the car i was driving. The problem up there, is if you have no spare, you may have to wait a very long time for recovery and it is a very long way back to anywhere that may be able to supply a tyre!
