4200 Import/Export

Hello,
I had a quick question re: importing/exporting my beautiful 4200. I am here in the UK and purchased my car about a year ago, but I will eventually have to go back to the U.S. (not with out a lot of kicking and screaming - we love it here). I've been trying to find out if there will be any problems taking the car back with me. Does anyone know if I would have problems re: customs, etc.? Thanks,

Hi Tiburon44, given some of the reports off maseratilife, I would have thought it would have been far cheaper to just sell here and buy again there.....surely the cost of freight/hassle and any duties will outweigh the VFM cost of a 4200 over there?

I am sure theres a thread or two on the above mentioned board about doing what you propose!

Hello, thanks for the response......One of he benefits I get is the free (govt. oicks up the tab) of a vehicle back to the states, so that'll help off set the costs, but selling and rebuying is one thing to consider, and I'll check the other thread too......Thanks

Importing a car to the US is a royal PITA. Did it in 2002 with a plain Jeep Wrangler MY 1998...

Check this site out: http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/index.html and if you still are positive about taking your car with you, get in touch with a "registered importer":

They are the only ones allowed to do this kind of job. ...and it won't be cheap :-(

...actually I was really lucky when I did it. I got a hardship exemption for the toughest part of the process (the EPA approval) - only thing I had to do was listen to a lady down in DC complaining about her life for an hour or so. On a side note, for me, being far away from any governmental activities (that would be except the IRS ) it was a really surprising hearing under what conditions she worked. Never the less, I hope the ladys life has improved - mine sure did when she approved my paperwork.
