4200 GT Cambiocorsa (2002) Clutch / Actuator

Issue: When attempting to select 3rd gear, it flipped back into neutral, and I could temporarily not select any gears.
When attempting to re-select a gear, I could hear the hydraulics working, but failing to find a gear. After a few attempts of trying to select reverse and 1st gear, I got back just 1st and 2nd gears only (no reverse, or 3rd+).

I took the car to an authorised dealer, who said the clutch (at 80% worn) needs replacing, and that would fix the problem. They were not my usual Maserati garage (I was trying them on recommendation), however the quote of a clutch seemed high (Clutch +9 hours + VAT = £2600, not including fly wheel, release bearing + seal, or spigot bearing).

I therefore called my regular Maserati garage who said they would do for much less (Clutch +9 hours + VAT = £2040). However, they also said I shouldn't need a new clutch at 80% worn, and this shouldn't be preventing me from selecting a gear. So a week later (post analysis), they said they had some good news… they bled and checked my actuator, which was fine, however they said that they believed replacing the clutch would resolve the problem, and to call back in one day (so back to their original quote of £2040).
The next day I received a call that the actuator is now not working since they've connected it back up, and that the reason they didn't find an issue beforehand is because it wasn't under load from the gears when they were checking to see if it was ok. Now they want to change the clutch, and actuator, and that this will cost me £3700 + Vat (£4,440) – and this is for a second hand actuator (charging me @cost price). *They also noted that they have another Maserati 4200 in with an identical issue that has just had the clutch and actuator replaced.

My question is do you believe both the clutch and actuator need replacing in this situation, and if this is a reasonable price?
Any additional advice that may help would be very much appreciated.

Note - I've only recently had a full major service from the same garage + tubi exhust upgrade (2nd hand), which cost >£3,500 :0036:

Thanks very much for any advise you can offer – I'll let you know how goes in any case.

Hi UK....hoping you can dry those tears, I think there is a refurb service for the actuator...Loz is the man to ask, though hes not been on the forum recently, also the clutch can be changed for less......Loz also had done this recently by an MD.......not sure of his price, but am sure we can find out

Thanks P - I just hope I can afford a box of tissues after this!

I just called back the garage to try to clarify further, and they mentioned that because the clutch plates are not flat, this had caused the pin inside the actuator to shear, therefore apart from replacing the actuator (possibly £700 for second hand), that the clutch would also need to be replaced (even though only 80% worn), otherwise it would very likely break the replacement actuator.

Very grateful for any referb suggestions.
I'll also drop Loz a PM to see if he can advise.

Thanks again!

Hey Mat

Not good news, what a nightmare! If I were you I would ring round independents and get quotes: see here, http://www.sportsmaserati.co.uk/showthread.php/8284-Independent-maserati-specialists/page2 From memory I think that Maserati Shed might be the cheapest. But also see if supercarhub.com can offer you quotes.

I would also give a few independents a ring and ask them their thoughts, they may have seen this issue before. I would try phoning Emblem, Bill McGrath, Rob at Grimaldi, and Marios at Autoshield.

Once you have almost worked out what needs doing and the cheapest place to do it, if you have Recovery on your AA or RAC, get them to take the car there (they will put it on a flatbed and take it.

Good luck mate

Personally I would speak to Marios at Autoshield. What he doesn't know about Masers really isn't worth knowing. Good Luck, whichever way you get it done.

UKmatc,
Where are you based in the UK, someone may be able to suggest your best port of call for a reasonably priced fix. A clutch should cost no more than £1,500, bearings if you need them are about £40.00. IF and that's a big IF, the actuator has gone, I think a refurb is about £400, but that will have to be clarified by those who have had it done.
Cheers
