4200 Engine Temp

Hi All,

My 56 plate 4200 manual has always hovered between approx 85 and 93 when in heavy traffic but in the last couple of days the temp seems to be higher - up to just over 100. No side-effects whatsoever. I just wondered what could be causing this? Should I worry? Oil pressure a steady 2.5 while idling in heavy traffic.

While I’m here, where’s the best place to get the ’V8’ and ’Maserati’ chrome badges from?

Cheers!

With my ultragauge plugged into the obd2 port, the temperature never goes over 100 when left idling before the fans cut in and bring down the temp.
Are you reading the temp off the analogue gauge?

Is the cooling fan running with the temp that high?

If the temp creeps up only when in heavy traffic it must be fan related.
Does it cool back down to the usual 85-93 when your moving?

The fan resistor is a weak point, but when mine failed he fan just ran at high speed regardless.

The badges can probably be had from eurospares or meridian.

Cheers, yeah mine has been running the high-speed fan only since purchase in June with a resistor due to be fitted at a big service in a couple of weeks. This has always worked brilliantly, cutting in in the low 90s and taking back to mid-80’s in heavy traffic. Temp always down to a healthy level while driving. It’s noisy though, so I think bearings may be going making it less effective than before?

Cheers, I’m just going off the analogue gauge, but rising to a markedly higher temp in heavy traffic than it was before. Fan doesn’t seem to be kicking in later, just not cooling as effectively as before.

Hopefully that new resistor will sort it all out.

when my fans were running on high speed only it sounded like a 747 at take off

Can't recommend the digital ultragauge enough.
On mine the fans cut in late 90's and cut back off early 90's.
On a run thus last Sunday, on the motorway was running mid 80's.

Can I ask where do you mount your guage to view it whilst driving?

Self adhesive backed velcro to the back of the steering binnacle and the same the ultragauge to the aluminium strip.
Have to redo it on occasion the self adhesive backed velcro unsticks from the steering binnacle if the car is left outdoors on a hot day, the glue becomes gummy and looses its stick!

Temp up to 120 (by the analogue guage) this morning in traffic. High speed fan on constantly but seemingly not doing the job. At what temp could damage occur? I think I’ll take her off the road until that new fan resistor is ready.

Something not right for sure.
Fan resistor isn't going to make any difference if the cooling fan is going full speed, do you get a hot blast of air on your leg when getting out of the car with the engine still running?
You need to get a obd2 reader or a Bluetooth dongle plugged in to read the digital temperature to ensure your analogue gauge isn't reading incorrectly.
However, is the temperature appearing normal when not in traffic?

As above there is more to it than the fan speed control / resistor.

I wouldn’t run it that hot, over 100 would concern me. But need to check actual temp as could be just indicating too hot. I.R temp gun would give you an idea quickly.

Does it cool down when out if the traffic?

Check the front of the radiator for debris blocking airflow and between the radiator and condenser you will be amazed what a mess they can get into.

I had the same last month. My thermostat was broken. Stuck at about 60% open. Engine ran too hot (100) during slow traffic and too cold (70) down the highway at 70mph. Replaced it. Remains at 90 at all times
