4200 door opening noises

Hi all

Now the weather is improving(!) it's time for me to be fettling some more.
One of the irritations in my classic is the door. It sounds *horrid* when you open or close. Nasty clicking / snapping noises. I assumed that this was the check strap. The Alfa 156 / GT based cars used to have a similar issue as they wore out, but this was replaced in November, and it was much better for a while.

So the plan is to whip the door card off tomorrow, and see if I can spot the problem (and find the irritiating rattle inside), as well as check the speakers as the Parrot seems to be throwing up the limitations of the speakers, now I have *music* :D

When I had my speakers replaced, the guy was shocked by how crappy the factory ones were...magnets like a stack of £2 coins and cones of tissue paper was how he described them.

The sound now is great. But sometimes it's better to turn the whole thing off and listen to the car!

Chris, I can relate to that. I like some banging' choons though, at times. At least until I get the exhaust 'fixed' :D:D

Must admit the standard stereo is pretty naf. I find it will not hold a station for any length of time, i have fiddled but to no avail

I've replace my speakers recently with some slim line Hertz versions. Pretty good but you are limited in the fronts by depth and therefore sound quality. The ca really needs some low end reinforcement, which I am planning but haven't come up with a suitable solution that can't be seen.

Innit just. I wondered about a new antenna, but...
The Parrot has a line in, and I was considering fitting some kind of radio and plumbing it in there.
It also has line *out*, but not sure where I could put an amp. I guess under the passenger seat would be an idea, or the boot, but that would be quite a bit of wiring involved.

Let me know if you do. Can you tell me what speakers you got?

I've had focal speakers put in all round, they have a good set of componets for the doors that fit well. Also had a focal i20 amplified bass speaker put in behind my seat, but that's only really ok for a spyder. Turn it up and I can shake the seat with some dizzie rascal. It's mostly not visible, as long as you don't look for it...

The fronts are Hertz ESK F165 slim line, and the rears are ECX 570 (I think - the 5x7 equivalent in co-axial rather than component form).

The rears are honestly a PITA to fit. You have to make some sort of ring as the speaker is slightly larger than the hole and adapt the grill so it doesn't hit it when back in position. In hindsight it probably would have been easier to get a round speaker and make up an adapter to suit.

R.e. the low end, I'm thinking of creating an enclosure in the wheel well - the amplification will need to go in there too as I don't want anything on show and don't want to loose any boot space. I have a JL 8W3 that I am going to experiment with before finalising... I'll keep you upto date!

Thanks both. I'd like to know what the focals are as well.

FWIW the door card didn't even have to come off (although I did it *twice*) as the the noise was from the door component that the check strap goes into. The mounting bolts for this are actually in the door slam, covered by a rubber trim. As soon as I got in there with a torch, it made sense, and a 10mm spanner has restored class.

Twice, because I dropped the last screw behind the card....
