3200Gt Auto 'RCY' light....

Afternoon all,

Just been out for a blast in the 3200gt (2001) and when slowing up to a junction, the engine cut out and the RCY dash light appeared - understand this is a fault with the auto box. Turned her off, key back to ignition and through the usual start up routine, turned her over and the RCY fault has gone but has now been replaced with the engine management light (to be expected!) - crawled her the last mile home but all seemed ok; the box changed up and down fine and no unusual noises etc.

I have noticed over the past week or so that after a hard run, I catch a whiff of what smells like very hot gearbox fluid, hence yesterday I went down to JCT600 Maserati Leeds to book her in for a gearbox fluid change. Obviously I need to get her diagnosed and until so, dont plan on using her - but wondered if anyone was familiar with any 3200 auto box faults or if any others had had the 'RCY' dash light appear during use?

Also - to note, twice in the past 48 hours I have got in the car, usual startup routine, turned key to start and shes semi choked over before dying - then to be met with a similar response as with an old school flood; leave her 15 minutes or so and she fires up fine! Nice couple of new issues just in time for the sunshines arrival...

Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

Ben

Ben, if you're over in Leeds, pop over to Autoshield in Chorlton, it's only about 35 mins away. I had the RCY light on on a 3200 a few years back, I don't rememeber what it was, but it was sorted pretty easily. Russell and the boys will know and hopefully sort it out. Main dealer might want a remortgage as it sounds like you may have a couple of things playing up.

Hi Dicky,

Many thanks for the advice - ironically, I've been on the Autoshield website this afternoon and plan on giving them a call to book her in tomorrow. Will let you know what it turns out to be once resolved! Hopefully they can sort this one out pretty easily too! Thanks for your input,

Ben

Ben, if you're there today, I'm collecting the MC Victory after having had its new clutch fitting. Might see you there.

Morning Dicky,

All booked in for next Tuesday with Russell & co, so sadly won't get chance to meet you and your motor!!

Hopefully once she's finished I'll be attending some meets so sure our paths will cross in 2012.

Cheers for your help & advice, enjoy the car! :)

Hi Ben,

You can not go wrong at Autoshield-Maserati. Marios the owner is a great guy and knows what there is to know, he has a great team of chaps, including Russell, who work for him and they will sort out the problem at a reasonable cost. I recently had my 3200 serviced, cam belt change, new 550 discs fitted all round, 2 knock sensors, 1 turbo pressure pipe, 1 pressure sensor & 1 crankshaft sensor. That lot cost me only around £1500, they used my discs mind you. The car is brilliant now and Autoshield do not stop until the car is as good as it get's. Highly recommended.
For small stuff there is also an Indie in Sheffield, but I have no idea what they are like.

Cheers
R

Hi Robert,

Cheers for the reassurance- I've only heard/read good things about the guys which was further confirmed when speaking to them earlier!! Sadly I'm having to get the car recovered there tomorrow as she's not running right- keep losing power, before total cut out, typically about half a mile from home and about 10 minutes before the new windscreen fitters were due to arrive with my long awaited new screen!! Fortunately I managed to crawl her home so now at least the screen is done!!

Look forward to getting her back from the guys next week- hopefully without the need for a mortgage on the repairs!! ;)

Cheers for ya comments- and have a good weekend! Will keep you posted on the work...

Hi Ben,

Did you eventually get this sorted by Mario and crew at Autoshield? What specifically was the issue that caused the RCY gearbox fault and what was the solution?

Thanks,

Simon (prospective 3200 GTA owner).

The RCY light just indicates a fault has been registered it’s not indicative of a particular fault, could be anything from a lose plug to a complete failure of the box.

Dropping down a gear could be a sign but I’m not really up on auto boxes.

Ideally try and get the codes read. Are you close to any indys?

I have exactly this issue - apparently to be solved with a gearbox flush and filter change - there is a thread somewhere, the filter was about £40 from memory available on eBay

I would also suggest filter and fluid change on the box, I think this has helped with most gearbox related issues, for me. Fluid level is the one that causes the issues, it has to be bang on. The only waeakness i have found with my auto was the final drive bearing and oil seal both of these went on my car, causing fluid leaks and vibration at high speed. You will be able to see the oil leaking from under the car. The gear box is generally pretty tough.

Virtually the same transmission as that fitted to many thousands of Ford Falcons in Australia. During a tour of the Bog Warner factory in Albury, I noticed a separate batch of 'boxes' - slightly different from the rest. "Maserati", I was told!

Recently my 3200GT auto. needed servicing. The Falcon parts were almost free...:)

Thanks for that one mate.... and I recon the 3200 diffs are Aussie made too but with ZF type internals

mmm - I’ve noticed a small drip
Do you have a part number for the seal and bearing?
Is it a gearbox out job or can it be done externally from underneath

Neither the seal or the bearing are easy to find. You can replace these from beneath the car, however the exhaust and prop shaft have to be removed to get into it.

The extension housing (where the seal and bearing are) can be removed from the back of the gearbox quite easily once you have access. The bearing is pressed into place so you will need a decent vice to get the new one in.

The two items are 4 and 5 in this diagram

thank you - not too bad a price either
Removing my stainless steel straight through exhaust will be painful!
Perhaps I will drive it to a garage straight out the manifold!
Just for the crac
