Good evening all, after many months of trouble free motoring, my GTS threw a CEL with a couple of misfires logged along with P1013 - intake camshaft and RH main bearing crankshaft correlation (Signal) and P0011 - RH main bearing timing sensor (objective not reached). On clearing these codes the P1013 keeps returning and with the diagnostic tool plugged in says “present”. The car drives fine and there is no CEL illuminated anymore. Maybe the idle feels a little rougher than normal but that may just be me.

Does that sound like the cam sensor?

The engine number is 166122 and I am not hearing any rattles so assuming it’s not the variator issue.

Thanks

And when it says RH, is that the right side of the engine as you look at it from the front of the car (where the windscreen washer filler is) or the left as you look from the front (oil filler side)

Right and left are as if you were sitting in the driver’s seat.

Those codes sound to me like the right variator isn’t working, as they’re detecting it’s not where it should be rather than the sensor has failed. Could be the solenoid has failed.

Can you read live data of camshaft position?

I’ve done a bit more investigating and P1013 is definitely a persisting code when warm. I took the car for a drive earlier and there were no engine lights. Stopped for fuel and the moment I started her up there was a permanent CEL. Drove back home and had a couple of intermittent CEL on the way - checked the codes and had P1013, P0011 and 3 misfire codes P0300, P0301, P0303.

Clearing the codes and restarting the engine, the P1013 comes back but no CEL, turn the ignition off and start again then the CEL comes on.

Any further ideas/areas to check?

Thanks

Further tests earlier…. Started the car from cold - no issues, no CEL. Let it idle and warm up a bit then restarted again - still no issues, no CEL. Tried a 3rd time and still no issues.

Looking at all the engine data I recorded yesterday on a drive, there is a value for “Misfire Counter (Current)” which at a point reached 55. It’s not a cumulative count as it resets and it didn’t log as a misfire. Maybe it needs to reach a certain threshold before it throws an engine light and logs a code. I do recall the car feeling like it was down on power yesterday (smooth but sluggish on kick down until it got past 5,000rpm).

However this has lead me to think if some of the coil packs are past their best and failing more so when hot. Also checking the oil levels it’s past the maximum mark so I wonder if it’s getting contaminated with fuel!

Don’t really want to go down the throwing loads of money at this route - been there before with a recurring misfire that turned out to be a weeping seal on the head vent pipe. Hence trying to diagnose this myself (which is also quite enjoyable!).

Anyway could this all be as simple as failing coil packs when hot? Hopefully!
