56k service outcomes - brake fluid / gearbox mount

Hi All, just collected the 2005 GT from main dealer, post 56k service. A couple of things I will pick up myself now they are advised:
- brake fluid needs changed: any special approach needed or just the usual bleed through?
- gearbox mount is leaking - eurospares a lumpy £415 plus vat for just a mounting!! Any alternative parts options and is the mount replacement straightforward?

As ever the wise counsel of the forum much appreciated. I did search the site 1st but didn't find anything.

Cheers

Thought the brake fluid would have been included in the 56k service?
But it is just the same as any car with ABS, one of those one man bleed kits works just fine, if going by the book it should be changed every year.

That mount is expensive! Relatively easy to reach at back of gearbox so possible Diy.

The brake fluid is simple, I used a eazi bleed and it was a doddle.

I’ve not done the gearbox mount, but it seems fairly straight forward (famous last words!)

Tks, just wanted to check no special process in bleeding a 4200. Agree mount looks like straightforward change.

Brake fluid change should be part of the annual service surely!! Bloody dealers :/

It has been done at every service for the three years I have owned my 4200

If it's a manual, we've heard of the fluid not getting properly flushed and it crystalising in the piston. The manuals share brake fluid to actuate the clutch....So dealers deffo skip it, or dont pay attentiom to the workshop schedules from time to time, and it leading to a duff clutch pedal ( OP does say GT?)

In terms of fluid change, yes schedule says change every year. That said you then pay for it too. My main dealer priced based on inspection basis which was fine by me. This especially so as many moons ago my Scottish specialist said if hydroscopic test passed and not too old then fine as is and spend your money elsewhere on what really matters, clearing disc vent holes / adjusting hand brake, touching in under seal etc. Risk based service rather than tick box.

Each to their own, as ever.

Is that silicon DOT 5 fluid as good as it says on the bottle? Does not absorb moisture, inhibits corrosion and lasts for ever?

Don’t know about forever but I have ordered the Motul 5.1 fully synthetic long life stuff which I doubt warrants changing each year.

Yes but unless it's for an application where it's bled / changed regularly don't use it.

Over time water gets into braking systems (moisture in the air etc). With conventional hydroscopic fluid, it is absorbed and slightly lowers the boiling point of the fluid (more water, lower the boiling point) which is why the fluid needs to be changed every year or two.

With DOT 5.1, the moisture isn't absorbed so exists in the braking system as water, which will boil at 100C (a lot lower than brake fluid with water in it). Under hard braking, the water could boil resulting in loss of pressure in the system. Also the free water will cause corrosion.

Cheers,

Simon

I’d just change there fluid once a year with standard stuff, if you’re doing it yourself it is only a few quid and couple of hours / cups of tea.

Also the bleed nipples will not be seized solid with regular changes.
