but I learned something new - and thats good! Thank you!Sorry it didn't help, but it does eliminate that possible issue.

I reckon it’s one of the connectors on the back of the heater control panel. I don’t think the ICE unit does anything except display data from the HVAC panel.
Pull the ICE unit and try disconnecting the plugs in the HVAC. If you find one that has no effect that’s probably the output to the screen. Or you could be more technical and try and correlate wiring colours between the two.
In the meantime I found ut the correct procedure:
the ignition on / off
temperature to "max cold"
middle knob to "auto" (we don't care about the fan knob)
press and hold the econ, and recirculate buttons
ignition on
both button LEDs start blinking
reset is done after blinkings stop
but unfortunately, it didn't help in my case! :-(
All three heater control units are working in the background but it's not displayed what they are doing! The display stays frozen as the pictures show - nevermind what you are doing
Just thinking outloud. From memory on the 4200 when you switch on the ignition and the screen springs to life the basic info appears on screen but the temp and sat nav signal take a little longer to show correctly on screen as it is waiting for the sensors to wake up.
for example the sat nav icon stays grey until the gps antenna gets a lock and then turns green. The temperature stayed at zero i think iirc for half a second and then showed the cabin temperature.
The screen itself is only showing what the NIT in the arm rest tells it to show.
Which leads me to think that the issue is either an iffy connection either to or from the NIT or the cabin temperature sensor is broken or loose connection giving a bad signal to the NIT and inturn to the screen.
If it occasionally shows correctly then it could well be a break in the wire that sometimes makes a connection.
Another forum member (Dave ? Possibly) Did a lot of work on the NIT and its innet workings. Im sure matt or somebody will remember who it was and maybe shed some more light on it for you.
When you do the reset procedure if you look just below where the gear number is indicated on the main speedo cluster it should show a set of codes if there is a fault on the system.
From memory if it shows AA then 00 there are no errors recorded. Any other codes it shows make a note of and let us know. The codes are shown in 2 digit pairs 4 digits per code.
Post 9 on the link below gives you the list of error codes. Same codes apply to 3200/4200 and GS.

AA 00
I think it may have been @davidhowson that did a lot of work on the internal workings of the NIT.
Hopefully he can if i have the right person shed some light on it.
good hint!I don’t think they go to the NIT first, because I have completely removed my NIT and replaced it with a Pioneer ICE system. I can still adjust the fan and the temperature with the controls and turn on the AC. I also connected a 7V feed so the controls light up as well.
The snowflake is nothing to do with the A/C, it is the indicator for Ice Warning.
The -- -- indicates a fault with the temp sensor. It could be the mirror housing one of the heater one.
The diagnosis you did in post #18 should also show up any error codes in the centre display
I belie so, it only comes on with the ignition key turned to MAR
