Tracker

I had a ghost (pin entry on startup) on my last car, debatable whether it’s actually any use. It’s annoying you having to do it and if (or in my case) it’s needed it means any thief needs you and not just keys.

It was occasionally temperamental in an Audi so not sure I’d add one in to Italian electrics!

Vodaphone Tracker here. No issues with drain but the car is on a trickle charger and the insurance insist on one. A nice lady phones you when you leave the fob at home, so at least I know it works!

I use a cheap n cheerful Amatrac. £50 from Amazon. Using the same Network SIM as my phone means zero Comms cost.

Plugs into OBD port

And I can track, ring fence, zone, speedcheck even map historic journeys/history along with speed etc.

Worth £50 just to play around with functions.

Even lets me know if it is unplugged from OBD port!

How does the sim work? Have you got a duplicate of your phone?

Just looked at a listing for this on Amazon and they can sell you a sim for a £5.00 and it reads like that’s all you pay ?

My insurers required a tracker on the Strad, so I had fitted the cheapest applicable model. I have the details on file in the office, so will revert tomorrow.

And your data costs, I imagine....

I use giff gaff. So both SIM on giff gaff and no data charge. I was prepared to pay but I put £5 credit on the SIM in the Amatrac a year ago. Still there and works a treat!?

It’s often cheaper to pay the additional insurance cost than to fit and subscribe to the tracker. In my experience, at least.

Trouble is, would you want the car back if it had been stolen? Be hard to replace, though.

My eldest brother for the second time had his car (Volvo XC90) stolen from his driveway. Given this was the second theft, he went with Volvo's own tracking system. He also kept the key in a signal blocking pouch. According to the CCTV they were in the car inside of a couple of minutes, and the tracker had been disabled.
He now has an MG HS PHEV, and fits a steering lock. On a different point, great value for money, with virtually all the kit of the XC90 but at £33k getting on for half the cost of the Volvo or his previous Lexus. Aside from an ongoing issue with the infotainment which his MG dealer is still trying to sort, the car is very well put together.

Blimey that’s bad luck and demonstrates what a farce keyless entry is, why it isn’t mandatory for manufacturers to fit a switch to turn the remote off is a mystery to me.

How do you stop Giff Gaff from disconnecting the SIM from the network if you don't regularly use it? I always get warning emails that they are going to void my SIM card if I don't make a call on it in the next couple of days.
