Saw a new Land Rover Defender for the first time, on the M4 Friday. I hadn't realised quite how vile they look.

Nasty Rav4 haunches, silly 'open square' rear lights, an amazing ability to look both horribly boxy and absurdly streamlined at the same time. This is a travesty. FACT!

My very crapppy picture as proof:

Proper official pictures:

If you build it they will come , as kev said

I can't see many farmers filling them up with sheep , another SUV for the school run , land rover appear to have built a vehicle that competes with no other manufacturer

They’re £70k and there’s loads being offered in the trade with minimal mileage as the owner bought it and can’t get along with it. £70k for a comedy Defender, or £25k for a proper one which actually serves a purpose, so long as you never want to drive it on the road.

I like it. The wife loves it. I guess it's one thing for one, and one for another.

Marmite car.. Fugly in my eyes.. But on a more serious comparison, yes they can win tug of war contests with the old shape etc etc, (See Mat on Carwow for that gem).. .. but a pal of mine has a SWB 90 and was rear ended in back left corner and it needed 3 parts and 2 hours labour to sort it out at about 1k.. His LR mechanic said a similar low impact shunt in a new one would need more like 25 parts and 4.5k.. so nope i really can't see these catching on as serious utilitarian vehicles at all..

Would rather spend £7,000 to £10,000 on a mint as new top spec P38 imported from Japan.
Couldn't think of a nicer place to be for a wet, muddy snowy and icy winter anywhere in Europe.

Personally I like them. Wouldn’t mind a swb on steels as a daily

Exactly that. A luxury square SUV. And they do it in a commercial version, so can be a tax efficient company purchase.

The commercial I can understand , claim the vat back and run it as a van but the rest are just pointless , there are better ways to spend 70k

If it were a full electric commercial it could be interesting and make some sense. Otherwise then I'm less convinced.

If we were offered less choice it would be simpler for all.

And the reliability is not too good either. Seen lots of reports on YouTube of engine lights coming on as soon as they are driven out of the dealership!
I'm surrounded by 7 sheep farms where I live in Cumbria and none of the farmers will go near them. Still drive around in old Defenders, Landcruisers, Shoguns, Isuzu's, Mitsubishi L200's and Nissan Navara's most of the time because they are pretty much bullet proof.

Did you see that the new Ineos Grenadier is going to be fitted with a Hydrogen power cell. They've signed a deal with Hyundai to supply these units. Hyundai currently lead the field in Hydrogen development for motors. I also found out that the chap who owns Ineous runs the majority of the Chemical and Oil refineries in the UK now and produces over 300,000 tonnes of hydrogen a year. So he needs a home to get rid of the hydrogen. A perfect match!....

Nail on the head there Dicky....As long as you don't drive it on the road. I drove an old one once I never will again. Horrid vehicle unless you are a farmer on the fields.
