Anyone know the law on number plates?

Iv got a private plate that is less letters than normal standard number plates. Is it legal to have a shorter plate in this instance? The letters are the correct size, correct spacing, correct space between letters just loosing the excess colour either side of the letters.

On the picture the rear is a standard plate length and the front is how I’d like to do it if possible

Thanks

Yes it is legal, I can’t remember the exact rules but they dictate the size, style and spacing of letters / numbers and also the space around them - so a shorter plate is perfectly possible and legal.

Does anyone have a picture of the rear of their car (granturismo) with a shorter plate? Going to go short at the front, but not sure how it would look at the back?

As long as the spacing and letter size is correct the plate can be shorter. There are a number of predefined sizes available but spacing and size are the critical things. The M4S XX above looks to me to have incorrect spacing and therefore is illegal whereas Ewans look correct and should be fine.

Ha, yes my plate in the photo is illegal as far as character spacing is concerned, but the plate size is legal (11mm gap all round).
Here's the legal version.

I've got short plates on the front and rear of my QP and personally I think they suit the car much better. They seem less intrusive. After all, Italian (and US) plates are tiny and I can't help but think that would have been a factor in the the design.... All fully legal 63030630316303263033

TBH I prefer to see the spare white or yellow on the plate if you have less characters. I dont like the small cut off plates but just my opinion.

Where did you get your plates from?
Thank you
Jake

Mine were made that way by Ferrari on request but i have used plates4less before. They make them in Ireland and send next day, avoiding the nonsense UK requirement to produce a v5 etc. You can select whether you want legal plates or show plates etc.
