Its a bit of an art form but with practice you know when to switch off just before the motor starts. I suppose it's around 3 seconds.

OK. That sounds like a loooong time. I'll check when I go out tonight, but I'm thinking sub second which may well be where our differing experience is coming from.

If I'm right, I suspect there's something else going on that might well be profitable to look at.

Mine turns over for longer than I expected before firing, but always the same delay. At first it was just long enough to make me doubt it was going to fire. Now I am used to it i just let it happen.
Maybe this induced delay does pressurise the oil system before ignition?
For reference my (V8) 3200 GT fires up much quicker (when it does actually start)

My QP always starts after approximately 3s. It certainly turns over before it even attempts to fire, whether hot or cold.
I like the idea - it will certainly generate some oil pressure before throwing the fuel in.

Actually, I've no proof it doesn't inject fuel, but I suspect that the ECU is deliberately holding off ignition for that period, and that being the case it wouldn't be programmed to inject fuel which would subsequently cause potential damage.

That would be a sensible approach. Curious that it takes much longer than mine to start. Do you wait for the lights to go out? Dry sump?

Doesn't change no matter what I do about waiting or not for the lights, and yes it's a dry sump engine. The Spyder starts virtually instantly, same as you are reporting.

I've heard other QPs being started, usually at Shiltech, and drew comfort from them behaving exactly the same as mine.

I think it is for added drama.
And to maintain the "Maserati reputation" amongst the great unwashed that italian cars are "unrelaiable".

Started my car Saturday after days of it sitting on the drive - not a hint of a rattle. Started it this morning - after 2 days in freezing/snow. Again, not a hint of a rattle. Makes me think that the valve fix at Emblem may be the way to go or the spring suggested earlier on this thread. Surely it can't fix its self.

At the same time (Saturday) the airbag light that has been on for a month - then decided to go off.

Maybe we could all record the 10 secs around start up as a reference for worried owners?

I did this one last year - it has the engine start plus a merged mix of the exhaust, so it's not totally 'clean', but you can clearly hear how long the starter is turning. Disregarding that you can hear the exhaust note just before the starter finishes - it certainly doesn't catch immediately.
