Help needed on potential Granturismo purchase

Hi guys!

I currently have a Jaguar XF S and a Porsche Boxster S Black Edition. I don't use the latter very much so am looking to go down to just one car, but need something more WOOFWOOF than the Jag so am looking into the purchase of a Granturismo, for use as my daily driver. I would be fine with a regular 4.2, UK roads/traffic being what it is and all - even that is a good deal quicker than the Jag - and in any case I'm buying the Granturismo primarily for the looks, the badge and the sound. So, can you guys please tell me if in your opinion the Granturismo is good as a daily driver - is it easy enough to drive and reliable enough? I am looking to spend around £30K for one at maybe 40,000 miles. As I understand it, we're talking about £2K per year for servicing and about 19mpg on average. I'll be doing about 11,000 miles a year in it. Also, is there a decent independent Maserati service shop anywhere in Hampshire/Berkshire? I'm located on the North Hampshire / Berkshire border. I'd be looking for that servicer to do a pre-purchase inspection on any car I go for as well as look after it for the handful of years I'll own it.

Many thanks!

Welcome Jim

Yes is the answer, I use my GTS everyday and it is all the better for it. Make sure you get a good one from a reputable dealer (ADG, Nuvola, Dicky Grace etc...) and check the variators have been done.

The nearest specialist to you would be Emblem in Poole who are top notch. If you want to see mine in Newbury feel free.

Thanks for that - Yes it would be extremely useful to have a look at your Granturismo - maybe Saturday morning if you're free?

I'm going to have a look at the Blue one at Merrydown Garage on Saturday and will take a test drive. Not ready to make a purchase yet though. But thanks for the offer, I really appreciate it! Will report back.

Is the Granturismo a reliable and good drive for a daily?

Yes. Absolutely fine. Never had a problem in my 3 years of ownership.

However servicing is not necessarily every year. It is every 12,000miles or every 2 years. Whichever comes first.

I used mine as a daily driver and it was excellent. Good fun on the A & B roads and superb at wafting down the motorway. With the exception of parking due to the size and mine having the MC Shift gearbox it was also the best car for around town - just lower the window and listen to it while crawling along in traffic! However, with 11000 miles per year you should also budget a set of tyres plus an older car either needs a warranty or a sizeable fund in case of spares required.

The only pain is parking, they are big, partking spaces are small and unlike a RR (which is about the same size) you sit low in the car. Get front parking sensors.

Jim

They are a great everyday car, I have the 4.2, live in Berkshire and haven't missed out on the extra BHP, due to stupidly busy roads. Drive it in sport and the pick up is fine, although not as fast as the 4.7 etc.

My car has done 25k and the variators (from what I know) haven't been done. Don't walk away from a good one if they haven't bee fixed, as Shiltech do the job for around £1,500. I wanted, Blue/Cream with comfort seats, Bose, main dealer history, etc, found the right car, and got enough off to cover the variators...
if they go wrong.

Hmm, something to watch out for then. So, how about tyres, brake pads and discs? How many miles are we getting out of each?

I'm still on original discs, and the car is on the third set of tyres. Discs and pads aren't crazy on the 4.2, independents have great OEM alternatives, tyres are ok if you keep the alingnment in check with a annual laser service, about £ 120.

My Jaguar XF is about the same weight as the Granturismo so I would have thought tyre wear would be similar

I think I get around 10k out of the rear and the same at the front. The fronts go because Maserati have a preferred alignment where most the inner of the tyre takes a beating, a slight adjustment from this and the fronts last longer.
