X-pipe fitted

So yesterday (as it is now) I finally got round to fitting the X-pipe straight through section I snapped up from Moz1000 as early as August last year when mine was all in pieces.

It was not the easiest of tasks as the clamp bolts on mine were all well rusted up but it works a treat and ads a lot more rumble and throatiness without being overly loud at this point.

I've not taken pictures of mine but borrowed the ones off Maverick's thread as it is near identical :)

I did a crude sound level reading before and after just on the iphone...

Tick over and blipping hard to get the peak; as I said it is not scientific I just propped the iPhone against the garage door.

I do intend to sort something for rears but I think it will be in the form of fitting Y-pipes and butterfly valves with a straight through tip option so I can run stealth or loud :)

It would be interesting to get a proper dB reading. The same app on my iPhone showed about the same readings as yours and with the valves open but how accurate that is is anyone's guess!

Well my phone is in a full Griffin armoured jacket and I'm sure that will have an effect.

I may be able to borrow a pucker meter at some point, Rockingham test at 2.0m away and ask you to rev to 3,000 rpm

Should that be 2m from the centre rear of the car of 2m from one of the exhaust, Newton? Although I suppose it doesn't make a pile of difference just curious as to what the "official" procedure is.

Don't know the official procedure, I know when I do sound tests on skate parks and ball courts etc. the procedure is to test from 20m away recording the mean, average and peak, also in use and not in use, then there is a little mathematics to establish the gain... or nuisance!

Hi Newton - glad the x-pipe worked out ok for you (so far) - I found it too intimidating with the Larini Sports Cats and back boxes on mine. Interestingly, I've just removed my Larini back boxes and am about to fit the stock boxes again - just to see what difference it makes. Frankly, I'm getting old and am now thinking I don't need the extra dBs that the Larini provide. If I like the Larini Sports Cats + plus standard-everything-else set-up, there'll be a pair of Larini back boxes up for sale.

That's what mine was like when I bought it and it was nearly as quiet as standard. I found that sports cats, standard centre a straight through rears was a good compromise and it would be even better with valved rears.

Pandering to my own curiosity I've been buggering about with my iPhone and a dB app. Start-up is around 99dB, idle is around 84, 2k revs is 101 and 4k is 103dB (valves open).

Which probably means the valves should be closed for the next MOT.

Which X-pipe is it. I've had a quote from Mij performance of £140 for a custom made pipe. I thought it might be worth a look. Does your x-pipe give a better sound in the car when driving?

If that's the case then I would be very interested in getting one from them.

I have been looking at sports exhausts and if I use my man-maths and squint at the price lists a bit, I can almost see how the prices of the rear sections from Larini, Quicksilver etc. are probably justifiable, due to shinyness, impeccable welding, the fact that they exit the bodywork accurately and the requirement for the addition of the usual Maserati tax.

The x-pipes on the other hand, seem to me to be an awful lot of money for what seems to be a straight forward bit of steel tubing.

Tinman, if you do decide to go down this route, let me know as I would be interested in having one myself.

It is a stock resonator X-section with the resonator cut out and two straight stainless tubes welded in instead. The price you have looks great, is that in stainless?

I'll let you all know if I get one. I have to convince Mrs Tinman that it's a justified purchase. It may cost me a spa day for her .

Is there any way you can do a video of the sound of your custom pipes. Mrs Tinman has also said it can't be too loud as the car already gets a lot of attention

I had that conversation, too. Did it anyway. She loves it.*

* Well, possibly. It seems foolish to confirm one way or the other.
