As the title says; should you upgrade to Windows 11 from 10, I qualify for the free upgrade so what is the catch?

We rolled it out at the last company. Nothing really broke. Nothing was much better. If you have no pressing need you might want to hold off a little longer but...

Ok be very careful here. I will declare my self pretty sick of Microsoft so not a fan really. However Windows 11 is the first windows system that has prescriptive hardware requirements for "security". And like all Microsoft software issues masked under the guise of security this is an attempt to increase sales of their laptops and desktop computers by making all of the existing PC's obsolete by making some mad hardware requirement part of the software. So if you are happy to buy a new PC and also happy to be bullied into probably having to buy a Microsoft PC then sure go for windows 11, but wait until all the bugs and the monopolies law suits are all settled because it will change. Microsoft are already trying to make my laptop obsolete by refusing to download some update which is apparently incompatible with my machine. I cannot stop it spending 10 minutes every morning deciding it does not like my laptop because its impossible to shut down updates, and the only way to end this madness is to buy another PC. So beware Microsoft are up to no good.

Linux has been quiet for the last few years, is it a dead duck? I used to run it and to be fair since I got my latest laptop running Windows not really looked into it.

Good lord, no. Quiet only in that your personal 'echo chamber' has not talked about it. Most of our devs use it.

Buy a Mac

Well yes, for so many reasons

A lot of this is driven by companies having to evidence their security on the back of things like GDPR. There's absolutely no reason that MS is 'better' but following their security 'roadmap' is easy and often appears cheaper (especially as many companies have licences all round)

We're not going to do that because it's not much harder and not really any more expensive to apply one of the alternatives. And lots of people will be much happier.....
.....including me

Seriously though it would appear that Microsoft are heading down the closed Mac route. Interesting.

it's hard to see where they are going with this TBH. The only thing that keeps most people on windows is that fact that it works on a range of platforms and there is lots and lots of software that works with it. It is also much easier to create real time hardware interfaces with windows than with a mac or Linux. so if they go away from this market then Windows has no reason to exist, I can't help thinking this will not end well.

Indeed. Apple are so far down that road already, surely this will be a market share lose to the fruit brand?

All the web coders I know are all firmly Apple now, spin back a decade and they were most definitely PC
