Fellow members.....

I am off to Italy in 2 months time, booked a car rental at a pretty competitive rate, the universes favourite airline Ryanair.....has brought our flight forward by 3 hrs, we advised our rental company of this and they want.....wait for it........

Not 10% more.....

Not 20% more......

Not 40% more .....

But a whole M********.......F********..........70% more..............

Can someone explain why they chose to do this?

Your choices are:-

(1) Pay it. I'm sure you can afford it - but it will leave a bad taste in the mouth.

(2) Just turn up three hours early and play dumb. They probably won't even notice and will simply hand over the key.

(3) Turn up three hours early and go off and have a nice long Italian lunch - shame you'll have to go easy on the vino - then go and collect it with a full tummy and happy with the world.

No 3 above would be favourite to me unless on a time limit. I'm guessing not as your original flight was three hours later. That said, 70% is a bit of a rip off.

Just booked car hire from Geneva Airport in a weeks time.
Received the confirmation and looking at the 'small print', there is a 20% surcharge payable on collection because the car is being collected from the airport! What! It's not as though they didn't know I was collecting it from the airport at the front end of the booking!

Yup, had the same thing there. The guys behind the desk are very helpful and smile like it's going out of fashion...not surprised, they must be the highest paid Avis clerks I ever saw.

I always thought the prices were location dependent anyway, so always feel this is a duplicated charge.

Booking from the French side is often cheaper. You take the risk that the French car maybe won't have the Swiss motorway vignette, so you'll have to cough up ±EUR €40 to use the short bit of Swiss autoroute between GVA and France, but often you'll find the previous customer will have put one on for you!

The other thing to watch at GVA is the Swiss rental companies charge extra for winter tyres - mandatory until April - despite the fact they are mandatory. I tried arguing this with them once asking them if they were going to charge me extra for the headlights which are also mandatory. They just smiled that smile.

Normally book for the French side, but they don't have snow tyres in the winter, so book on the Swiss side when going skiing and ensure the booking includes snow tyres as some don't, as stated, even on the Swiss side.
Even with the surcharge, less than £300 for a week, Golf Plus type car, so not toooo bad!

I didn't know that - I'll have to watch out for it.

Not the worst for half term, at short notice.

Last year I got an Ibiza through rentalcars.com (I can't remember who supplied it), Swiss, with vignette, winter tyres, for nearly four weeks over Easter, all for USD $500- but I booked nine months in advance and did it on their American site. Their prices for their 'Murican' customers seem to be a lot keener than for their 'Ourpean' ones.

PS: in GVA don't forget you can walk to P51 where the rental cars are quicker than taking the stupid transfer bus.

Much excellent advice above for car rental at Geneva.

I always book on the French side, where it's significantly cheaper, and takes no longer to get/return a car. Some of the hire companies do indeed have cars available with snow tyres on the French side, and it's still cheaper than the Swiss side. Had a Focus estate fitted with snow tyres with just 900km on the clock last week, for 30euros per day cheaper than the Swiss side.

Secondly, when you return, there's a single security door from the French side directly into Swiss departures, actually straight into the duty free store! I've ONCE had to wait 15s behind another passenger when using this door, typically there's not a person in sight. Compare this with the queue for the normal multiline entry, and feel the happiness :)

Often as quick and easy to drive through Geneva around the lake, than to buy a motorway sticker and go the long way round (assuming you are going skiing). It's a nice drive too.
