Can't fault a guy for trying. Not only was I born in the wrong place, I was also born at the wrong time.

Thanks Bebs. Unfortunately, the bottle had been kept at room temp, so had a fragrance of musk and vinegar notes! Not a crowd pleaser as it turned out. Oh well, the cheap Chianti we opened afterwards helped to wash away the flavour!Where has it been kept? If at 12-14 degrees constant it should still be ok. If kept a room temp all this time it will not be at its best to put it mildly. Here’s hoping

Sorry to hear that. Thanks Bebs. Unfortunately, the bottle had been kept at room temp, so had a fragrance of musk and vinegar notes! Not a crowd pleaser as it turned out. Oh well, the cheap Chianti we opened afterwards helped to wash away the flavour!
It really is a loss. Usually bottles of Châteaunef-du-Pape keep well, but in fact it all depends on storage and, as with cars, the number of owners to whom the bottle has belonged. At the end we just buy a bottle label and possibly a nice wooden package. It’s always a bit of a gamble with wines of that age, even if they have been stored properly. I opened a magnum of CNDP Domaine Marcoux 1998 new years eve and it hadn’t faired well and was poured down the sink. Luckily I had a standby magnum of claret ready so all was not lost.
Just shown that pic to our 13 year old lad (our resident deep fried dough connoisseur!) and now he has massive churros envy! That’s our 13 year old in a diabetic coma after the churros and hot chocolate pudding.

That CNDP came directly from the domaine along with cases of bottles and some jeroboams, straight into my temperature controlled cellar so in theory perfect provenance. Suspect I was unlucky with that particular mag.It really is a loss. I have forgotten bottles that I bought new in the cellar under the country house because I don't have the courage to be disappointed by going to get one to open it (I should have made a list).
I buy it from a an old colleague of mine at Farr Vintners, in btls and mags. £10ish a btl. Worth every penny.
@ 5+ cases it gets cheaper.. let me know and we’ll ‘group’ buyRemind me in July? I'll have a case
