What is not covered by a dealer warranty?

Hi everyone

Im fairly new to this forum but so far it has been a wealth of knowledge. I defiantly have a touch of OCD and want to know everything there is to know about GTs before I buy one and this forum is proving a very useful resource. I appreciate everyones input and hope I'm not boring everyone with my questions!

I am going to be buying a circa 2011 GTs MC Shift with under 15,000 miles from a main dealer with a 12 month warranty. I plan on keeping the car and putting an independent warranty on it once the initial 12 month dealer warranty is over. I have had a look around and warranty direct seem the best at around £1500 pa with full cover at main dealer labour rates. I plan on keeping the car long term and always having it under extended warranty.

My questions is, what costs will I likely incur that aren't covered by the warranty? Obviously tyres will not be covered by warranty. Am I right in thinking that if / when the clutch needs replaced this will be covered by warranty? The biggest expense I think I will incur would be new brakes but I have read that if you are a reasonable driver a set of disks can last over 50,000 miles.

Any thoughts appreciated

Hi Craig and welcome
No the clutch isn't covered by warranty but unless your driving in London everyday the clutch should last approx. 30-40K miles
I've just had my clutch adjusted and they measured 51% wear at 22500 miles.
So far I've had mine a year and in that year it's cost me £2500 on a service and I had the 4 wheel alignment done as it had new tyres fitted a year ago, I've just had to buy a new set again for the rear as they only last about 7500-8000 miles and I dont drive mine that hard either.
They are great cars and you wont regret your purchase.
My warranty has just ran out from the dealer and to be honest I haven't purchased a new one yet, now that's not to say I'm not going to but mine has been ultra reliable so far!
All the best Nick

Warranty direct have a number of different warranties with different levels of cover. We had a WD policy that covered were and tear which included clutch, discs (not pads) etc so check what they are offering. In simple terms with WD if it isn't stated as covered in the policy you can assume its not. WD also have a betterment clause which means if any parts are deemed to improve the car that you will need to make a contribution. You can pay a fee up front to have this clause removed (in our case it was £50) which is well worth doing.

I used to allow about 2K per annum for servicing and wear and tear.

Clutch wear seems to vary depending on driving style, and it isn't always down to how hard you drive the car, it appears.

Some items are clearly wear and tear and not warranty (discs, pads, clutch, etc.), however don't be surprised if you find that the warranty doesn't cover you for something you thought it should! I've had to report a dealer to Maserati UK before on this front (I was successful, incidentally).

The sports pack includes little so have a think about whether it would be worth it.

Brakes are hard to say and it depends on whether you can get away with two sets of pads for one set of discs. It's easy to have a good look at pad depth when you inspect a car and , anyway, if you are buying from a main dealer then the inspection report should include figures for pad and tyre depth as well as clutch wear.

You should also be able to pay extra to extend the warranty for the second year which is less hassle and may work out cheaper/offer better cover.

I will look into this as I imagine it would definitely be the most hassle free and secure option.

I took WD for my QP 2nd year ownership.
I did it on line and was quoted £1600
They called me quickly and looked for a better price and I ended up with £1400
They seem ok with a comprehensive list of covered parts.
They will also do an inspection before the warrant kicks in.
This involves a guy coming to view and test drive it, a look at the oil, air con Sat nav etc, - takes about 1 hour.
Of course the proof of the pudding is when you need them............................

Re warranties, put your 1500 in a box every year, it's then ready for that bad day...

That's what I do - well mentally - as, on average, warranty companies price products to make a reasonable margin so you have to be in the worst quartile of claims history to make it more cost effect to have a policy rather than just paying for repairs. However, the economy is moving to monthly payments for everything - irrespective of APR - as it makes it easier for personal financial planning for people to buy warranties, service plans, tyre protection etc etc.
