Wales First Nation to set a blanket 20mph limit in urban areas

To be fair, over the last couple of years 20mph zones are becoming the norm. around my area. I suspect it won't be long until it's nationwide.

I would suspect that 20 mph is not great for keeping the emissions down on petrol or diesel cars unless you can travel at 20mph constant speed and not have to slow down for speed humps.

Still it will give the cyclists a laugh as they ride past at 25 mph.

we still have speed bumps in the trial areas, with no plans to remove them. It’s a farce, it even applies to the arterial roads and I can guarantee in my local area makes no difference to how many people walk and cycle, as there was not a huge change in the 2 years we had lock downs.

Although it says Wales to set this local councils can have the option if they want to change or not but I would say all will.

Here it's the priority to the right growing faster than COVID-19.
Driving through villages and towns you have to presume that anyone can just come out onto your road so you have to go slow as you will be at fault.
I thought it was crazy at first and it is in my mind but it certainly makes things more peaceful.

So we don't have to slow down for roundabouts or junctions anymore then? Just gun it.

The ‘pro’ reasons given don’t seem plausible to me, to be honest. As others have said, it will increase fuel consumption, which must increase emissions, cost us even more and clearly is designed to be another backdoor revenue generator.

Here’s a graph of fuel efficiency vs speed: https://www.mpgforspeed.com/

I do think there is a strong case for safety where children play or congregate etc. but that’s not all areas and making it blanket means the negatives are magnified.

The places where there should be a 20mph limit is around schools, and in housing estates or where there are a lot of pedestrians.

A blanket limit is just stupid and will get the inevitable "it's a money making scam" "it's anti motorist" "what about cyclists speeding" "it will increase pollution" "it's not about safety" comments. Some of which are probably above (I've not read the thread).

As bad as 20 is with having to look at your speedo and getting hassled by everyone for driving too slowly - has anyone been on the A40 Westway recently? I drove into Euston for the 1st time in about 3yrs and was shocked to find the 4 empty lanes now have a 30 mph limit (it was sort of ok at 50mph) - it makes zero difference to the congestion at White City & Paddington but my god it's tedious!

I have severe doubts about any benefits for pollution control?!

It won't be difficult to look at the Speedo once the electronically controlled speed limiters are in place on all new cars. Saw a few road signs of electronically speed limited areas when in Europe recently.

All the minor roads round here have been 20 for a few years , nobody takes any notice because there's never going to be a speed trap

Bizarrely there's a primary school round the corner, the entrance is on a blind bend and it's a 30mph road 103240

The school entrance is about 15m further round on the left , it was only recently they moved the school gates back to stop the kids queuing close to the road , still 30mph though
