That is an awful lot of car for that money! even Cat-D

The Phaeton is the only car i`ve had more than once a 58plate and 2010 plate both 3.0 Diesels.
They are fantastic bargain second hand a great comfortable mile eater hugely refined.
The W12 is the same lump that`s in the Continentals and flying spur without the twin turbos.

When I used to get picked up for my red eye to the airport the Phaeton was always the car I hoped for. It was so much better than the S class, 7-series, or A8L. That was with the small diesel. It would be a beast with a W12. That said the owner had an issue with the power boot and it was a) a pain to get fixed and b) not cheap.

There's one round here somewhere, I've always resisted the temptation to goad him into a race (in the Merc at least) as his is a W12 and I've seen how quick they are!

A friend has recently ordered a brand new Audi R8 - in metallic purple. New! It wasn't as if he didn't have a choice of colours.

Was he really, really drunk? In the 90s I had two cars which were a deep metallic purple, a Golf GTi and a Vectra V6. Both were shite, and not just because of the colour.

Those W engines are awesome until they go wrong, most VW techs know nothing about them but the VW tech centre in MK is knowledgeable if you are close by

I think dry ice smoke will pour from the sills when the doors open - to the tune of Disco Inferno

That's the way I rolled in the nineties. Crass, coarse and quite without regard for dignity. See Le Mans 2017 thread for further examples of how forum members keep that dream alive.

Great way into Bentley running costs in a car that doesn't tick all the boxes..

Always loved the idea of them but rather than being a covert luxury bargain, these things are full on, the W12 at least, but with the downsides of looking like that 1k Passat down the road and not exactly a huge amount of horses for the fuel used..
I really get what vw were trying to do, but they should have made a great vw by making, well a great vw, not by shoving Bentley bits in!
How many will have be maintained like a Bentley / how many will be proper money pits...

Smaller petrol or diesel might well be a different story of course.

The W12 is a VW engine shoe horned into a Bentley not the other way round. The W concept has always been VW thing, it basically is a modular W4 that can be configured into multiple configurations W8 on the Passat, W12 in the Phaeton, W12 Turbo and W16 Turbo in the Veyron
