ULEZ - a longshot question...

I have a 2005 4200 Spyder that apparently isn't ULEZ compliant. TFL says it needs to be Euro 4 or later so I assume mine is Euro 3?

Obvious question - what sort of a job is it to make it compliant? Do I need to sell my house or can I do it in 2 mins with a hammer?

You can check directly with Maserati if it is Euro 3 or 4: info@maserati.com . They were very helpful to me, and told me the individual emission standards for my 2002 Spyder. You are almost certainly Euro 3 though, but good luck.

You can make your engine theoretically compliant by changing your complete exhaust system to the US spec style cats I believe, along with associated engine management changes - I’m pretty sure this is a major engine out job.

Even if you do that, TFL will refuse to reassess your car’s compliance unless it is a commercial van or truck, for which there is a mechanism for recognising compliance upgrades. So it would be a waste of money in terms of avoiding ULEZ charges.

Yeah. They don't care if your car is compliant, they just base it on the original homologation tests.

Only loophole is the very odd showman's exemption. So if you can train a monkey to drive your car....

They base it on the original homologation tests, the NOX results are not always given on the logbook (later cars do have it recorded on logbook}. THe critical requirement is that the NOX reading which is required to be below 0.08.

I recently contacted Maserati regarding my 3200GT and they confirmed that the homologation document shows it as 0.057 and therefore compliant, a certificate of conformity can be obtained via a main dealer. I have contacted HR Owen (as have always been helpful) who confirmed that the could provide this followinng a check of ownership, logbook etc and a fee of £500. Am in the process of sorting this.

From others I have been told that TFL are then awkward and try to refuse submission but ultimately accept when forced.

That's how much they care about improving air quality.

Pay up to improve emissions or pay for the charge is not an option.

If it helps - which I have no idea is it does - I have learned that my 1998 Boxster is compliant despite the standard checker syaing it's not. Back then, the Co2 etc was not listed on the V5 and so the assumption from the checker is that it doesn't comply. In fact, I can and have applied for a CoC or Certificate of Conformity from Porsche Uk which will them allow me to both update the V5 and also inform the LEZ w&&kers that it actually meeets Euro4 spec. It's load of admin but worth it in the end.

The question is, how many tickets are they handing out incorrectly and when will the mass lawsuits begin to recover innocent folks money.

Not that I have checked all the small print but suspect there is something in their small print covering them for "payments in error" just feels that they would do that.

Only because Nox is not indicated on V5 - in which case a copy of the Certificate of Conformity will be required - this is what i did.
It’s not listed on my V5 either. So what exactly is the process to avoid ULEZ - registering the car with TFL? How did you get hold of a certificate of conformity? I see the alternative is a letter from Maserati stating the Euro standard. Either way I don’t see how the emissions of the car conform …

Yes Certificate of Conformity from Maserati obtained through a dealer (inc cost etc). The Nox level of a 3200 is well under what is required for ULEZ. Many cars are they are just considered not compliant as it is not listed on V5 - required level is below 0.08 - 3200's are 0.057.
