To Strad or not to Strad....

Well they are there to make money first & foremost so aren't going to be doing anyone any favours I wouldn't have thought.

Better off selling the GS first for top money. Better off keeping the GS though aren't you?

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Keeping the GS is I'm sure the best option but have always fancied a Stradale and certainty cannot afford to keep three ! Redline have not come back to my question whether they are open on Monday but will keep the thread alive by letting you know what the car is like and will get it inspected if it looks okay.

Really appreciate all the comments especially as I'm not a good contributor to the site.

Good luck with the inspection. They wouldnt let me get a Spyder they were selling inspected by anyone other than their chosen mechanic.

If it’s the Spyder I looked at circa 2 years ago, you dodged a bullet, didn’t need a pro, it was awful....

Would someone just buy the strad at redline!? Honestly it’s a bargain, you will not regret it, strads are epic cars and the 2 seater version is the ultimate granturismo and always will be! Rare too with only around 30 in the UK will be a collectors item in the future! BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT!!!

Are you suggesting that limited edition V8 Maseratis will go up in value...I’ve never heard of anything so silly :)

If money was no object or I had a bottomless pit of it then no problem it would have been bought already. Trouble is I haven't!

I can't justify adding 30k on top of my 4200 to buy a car I'm going to use maybe 1k miles per year. I know a Strad is a fantastic car but it isn't twice as good as my 4200.

I'm sure others will be financially better off or with differing circumstances that allows an easier decision.

Someone buy it.....please.

Agree that the redline is us a bargain but even if I had the pennies I wouldn't as for me it has to be white on a two seater and preferably with a roll cage and the stripes as per FA57GTA. It needs to be a more shouty colour than grey for me. It's a shame the original owners didn't have more ******** and order some in red or brighter colours as they would look amazing. See Merrians for example .......

On a serious note re Strad future values my opinion is they are not ready to turn yet I feel they will remain static for the next 3-5 years. The new GranTurisimo that is due will keep them down until it’s a few years into production.

Limited model Maseratis generally need 10 years to turn and that’s not taking into account the over inflated market that we currently have that could quite probably collapse as it did in the 90’s.

For me, if I can get 3 years pleasure from a car then sell and get my money back, or near (either side) then I am happy.

Not done too bad:
3200 £21k sold £15k >£6k
GranSport £31k sold £29k >£2k
GTS £51k sold £48k >£3k
Spyder £12k sold £17k <£5k
Alfa Spider £4.5k sold £11.5k <£7k
GranSport £26.5k sold £31.5k <£5k

+£7k overall

^^ That’s a good way to look at it. I like to think that the passion and talent that went into designing these cars was driven by a love of driving, of aesthetics and of noise, not of prudent investment strategies. Any gain some in value should be a happy bonus.

I looked at it differently when buying mine. I swore that when they started with an 5, I'd buy one. I waited and waited and it didn't happen. That redline one is the first, decent mileage, car with a 5 and I think it's a one off as I suspect they need to turn it before they have to buy it themselves.

My man maths accepts that they will always be worth 50k and that's ok with me. Most cars at the price point will take much larger hits than that. If it stays worth 60k+ for a while longer, I see that as a win.

Just to put it in perspective, I've been tempted to buy a Bentley Continental GT as a daily driver. I'm not doing large miles these days and have other cars I can do that in anyway. A friend has a trade account at BCA and the prices for these are nuts. I'm talking 15k for a 75k miler from 2005 ish. Now that's depreciation! I think that even if it blew up I'd still get 10k back so the risk is small.

The average 100k car would be worth 23,500 after 7 years. Granted, that assumes a higher annual mileage but if we see values like they are now, this is a large advantage against average market condition. Warren Buffet would be telling you to buy now and hold.

Malcolm - you'd probably be better off having Richard Grace sell your GS, rather than using it as a part-ex. The Cup and a 2 seat Strad would make a lovely combination of rare Masers.

^^^Im inclined to agree with Ewan.

No point getting a bargain purchase if you get stuffed with your sale.

Careful with a cheap Bentley GT. I take my Audi to a Bentley specialist for all its work and there is always 4 or 5 in for work. He warned me off a cheap early one, most are very neglected and typically swapped by owners when a big bill is presented. I saw a couple of the invoices on his desk and it made looking after a masser look cheap. He said a typical annual bill is 5k at that age, with some running to 10k as they put more miles on. That's before something nasty goes bang.......!

Apparently they don't ride as well as the GT either. Unless that was just the guy that sold me my GT trying to shift it on as opposed to the Bentley he had in....

I briefly considered a Conti GT in the past. Some research indicated they suffer from a number of electrical issues, especially the early ones, and the cost of maintenance and repair parts is off the scale. I think this is why they are so cheap and so many for sale.

Yeh but all cars have issues if you look into it. It’s also reported disproportionately as only the problems are written about. If I do it, I will have my eyes open and may buy a warranty just to insure my madness.

Ewan, Thank you and agree. I'm off to see the car on Monday and have also dropped Nareman a line regarding his black strad. Had lots of helpful DM's that I'm really grateful for too.

We've all been there where logic seems to go out the window on these cars. I would love to keep all of them but sadly can't afford to.

Will report back on Monday and hope we get to catch up this year at an event.

Best wishes,

Malcolm

If this was a thread at the same time next year (all being as I would hope) I'd have your GS in a flash.
For me it's the perfect colour combo.

Whatever you do, don't trade it in, you'll be robbed of far more than any discount on the Strad than you'll ever get.

Malcolm's is a stunning example. Saw it at the Club AGM a while back. Similar mileage and condition to the grey and blue cars recently sold, indicating a current sale price of circa £40k. Anyone looking for an immaculate GS should seriously consider this one, with red being relatively rare as well.

Shame their isn't a red Strad available to match your Cup.

Must admit i've been blue fixated for long enough, when I went over to pick the car up, Dickie had various cars in various Reds, they do look so much better in the flesh than photo's, If I could I would have had the Pontavechio QP, its a great looking car. Damo's old GTS looks great close up too...
