To Larini or not to Larini - That is the question

Opinions valued.

I am 90% sure I am going to go down the Larini route for an upgraded set of rear exhausts for my 90th anniversary spyder -my main question relates to the mid section;

1) Larini 'sports' centre section

OR

2) Larini 'club sports' centre section

OR

3) Leave the OEM Maserati section in place

Context - I already have a hearing deficit (too much loud guitar playing in my youth).... and I want to be able to enjoy the car on long journeys without feeling like my ears have been bombarded at the end of the journey..

I find even with the OEM exhaust system when the car is in sports mode with the roof up and standing still - the low frequencies are a bit over powering...wife would say the same.

So for those who are informed ...... any views as to what the most suitable option is?

I love the difference the Larini makes, the question is how far is ...too far ...re the mid section...

Cheers in advance

Tom

Tubis on the rear of mine sound lovely on the rest of the factory set up.

They did on mine, but awful drone at 60-65, used to have to accelerate all way through. Annoying on motorway at times... had to get off!!

Option 2 (x pipe) will drone less on long journeys. X pipes are quieter low end as the revs build it gets louder and you get more of a rasp. While H pipes are deeper low end think more Nascar than Ferrari. Both will pop and bang on the overrun.

I have the Larini x pipe, the long connecting pipes and the valved rears.
There is no motorway drone at all and if I close the valves it becomes even quieter.

In my car, the drone was caused by the original connecting pipes. The Larini ones eliminated the drone.

Aredes, can you explain what you mean with connecting pipes? Do you have a picture? My Larinis cause a drone as well (although they sound terrific).

I have Tubi rears with rest being standart and no drone at any speed. Get a lot of admiration.

But I can't answer the original question. Tom, are u asking the secondary cats or the xpipe upgrade? If you ask me, if current is loud, any upgrade will be just more loud.

Only experience Larinis once when I lent a members 4200 face lift for a week. Sounded great but the drone at 70 on the motorwY was just too much for me...to the extent that my wife would go in it if it was motorway driving. May have been just that car but it wasn't great.

I posted a reply previously but doesn't seem to have come through for some reason.

Thanks for all the views... all are helpful..

Here is where I have landed - replace everything from the current resonator under the car ... I.e new x pipe, rear pipes and boxes.

If it is too loud will refit the original resonator.

Thanks again gents.

This is my 3200 with Larini Sports cats, centre section and rear boxes.

I suspect you will get most of this sound with just rear boxes, but the sports cats have made an appreciable difference to performance.

Or just delete the resonator etc

Hi Tom,

I love the setup on my GS Spyder, so it'll be what you could expect. I have Larini H pipe and 2ndary decat centre section. Valves rear boxes are standard.
I have zero nasty drone across the rev range and with the valves closed its very neighbour and motorway friendly. Open them in sport and I still have no drone but a an awesome sound.

I believe it's Panicracing who also has a GS Spyder. He did have the Larini X pipe and then the same setup as me, so could comment on how that sounds if you ask him. Basically between the two of us we could tell you the Larini X vs H difference, both with decat and standard boxes.
Late last year he was then changing his back boxes to Larini valved ones, so he's the perfect man to ask how a full Larini setup would sound on your 90th.

Well got around to fitting the Larini valves rear boxes and X pipe.

Finally the car sounds like it should have from the factory....

Wow is all I can say.... not very noticeable difference when out of sport mode... but the difference is phenomenal in sport.

A lot more Fcar- esque rasps, lots of pops and spits on the overrun..... all good.

No drone at any speed and surprisingly way way less drone at idle in sport than the original set up.

Definitely worth the € £etc...

Next need to find a way to make the clutch/ throttle and gear change more precise, like the challenges strad TCU.... still a bit too GT for me...

Very jealous of your X pipe, only have the back boxes on mine. You'll never tire of hearing that great sound.
