Right guys thoughts please on the above if it was just me I would be gone but I have family to consider. Was in Brittany for a week and travelled 1300 miles no traffic and good roads heaven realy. But why so many Brita coming back and some people been trying to sell for several years. Value for money seems amazing property wise and land is cheap. Thoughts much appreciated. Phil.

Hi Phil, having bought and sold a number of properties in France, its a piece of cake providing you follow all the rules and do your research.

Euro has been weak/strong/weak and now strongish again. So people on a fixed income pension, living there full time felt the squeeze at times. Plus the French messed with people as regards their access to free health if under 65, then moved the goal posts as regards income tax on rentals etc.

Prices in less popular places have been dropping quite a bit, only safe places Paris and Cote d'azur

My other half is from Brittany and we own a place in the Alps. Between family visits and trips to the mountains we spend a lot of time on French roads.

Last summer, for the first time, we turned away from France and took the QP to Scotland. I was bowled over; better roads, better scenery and even less traffic. We were even pleasantly surprised with the food we had too. We have actually had a few conversations about "what if we moved there".

I think you'll find the same Brittany roads in July and August are no fun. The weather too can be awful, certainly no better than the British Isles.

You will get more real estate for your money than anywhere in the UK but the taxes are not for the faint-hearted.

Scotland....surely you mean Ecosse!!!!

;)

I am inclined to agree with all your points...thats why London if it were a French city would be 5th biggest, so much freedom and little to pay in taxes....hhhmmmm.......ok to retire to France though....:)

we have a nice place in la Chapelle-de-brain close to Redon SSW of Rennes, we currently have tenants in but we are selling when we find a buyer we are also selling our hour in wales and moving to the black forest...
during the cold months yes the roads are clear as we live in a slightly rural area we are lucky and find the roads good during the summer but major port areas and major citys are not good during the summer months.

well if im honest about it i want to move to Italy, But for the benefit of our children the black forest is pretty much the best place to get an education and start there lives, once they are at uni stage then we will look at shifting our asse$ to Italy

Black Forest is beautiful Dave, and wedged between numerous other stunning areas.. Good choice. Especially when it's covered in whipped cream.

Most of the Mrs family live in France (my father in law is French) La Rochelle and Bordeaux areas.
Nice to visit in the summer, but couldn't live there full time.
My wife is the eldest of 6, there is only 2 remaining in France, the rest have settled in the UK after completing further education, in the UK!
Different if you don't have to work though and you are retiring.

I think that's the crux.

I too like the empty roads, better food, generally better weather etc but my other half, being French, has no desire to live there again. All the reasons she left her country are still valid to her. You only have to look at the number of French who have moved to London to understand the grass is not always greener over there.

Lots of people go and live abroad and quietly slip back 2-5 years later realising that the UK is a great place to live. To my mind lots of sun holidays in the winter and/or buying a small place somewhere hot is the way to go.

you'll find a Lot of people who do leave then come back do so for various reasons many dont research what they getting into a great deal , and more have a "sense" of British pride and once the locals dont speak English to them, they feel the urge/pull to return home.
