The Maserati wish

Hi all,
Thought I'd say hello as ive been lurking for a while and looking up info for some time on whether I should go with my heart over my head and buy a used maserati qp 4.7 or gransport once I've sold my audi a6, which I've shared the for sale link in the classifieds forum thread.
The hardest part is not having driven any sort of maserati before and most, if not all cars, within my range happen to be London and south of England area, whereas I am near aberdeen in North East Scotland! Most of my driving experience is volkswagen and audi vehicles in recent times, golf, a6, sq5, so all very much you know what your getting all year round practical car.
If anyone has advice on whether winter driving is doable please do share. Any other tips are most welcome on the most affordable options, service and maintenance wise, to go for.
Thanks and looking forward to the potential prospect of maserati ownership.

Hello and welcome. If you see a car your after we have a very wide network of members who would only be too happy to take a look at it.

The QP and GS are very different cars. If you plan to use the back seats and the roads are poor in your area, get the QP. If your after a faster drive with only occasional rear seat usage focused car go for the GS.

All the best.

Welcome to the forum.....GS and QP are great cars especially the QP in .7 form........As Matt has said two very different cars but on paper the performance is not that much difference......Although the 0 to 60 is not real world it gives you an idea.

GS 0-60 - 4.5 sec
QP 4.7 S - 4.7

But the QP is a very big car so the GS will be a quicker car on your favourite road. But you will be suprised just had well the QP handles as it has been well noted how it handles like a much smaller car....If it was me I would go for the newer QP but I then I have a thing about the QP..........The GS will be the better bet for holding it's value and if you want one I would buy now as prices seem to be rising every month....

Both cars have a very different character with the QP being a full auto and the GS a paddle shift.......You do get paddles with the QP but will find that full auto smother than the sportier GS box. I would get out a drive a few and see which you prefer as no matter what you buy you will have a cracking Maserati.

Welcome. Distance shouldn't be a factor for buying, possibly for test drive. I flew down to Gatwick, and drove 570 mile back. You will find lots of help here, your potential purchase will probably be known to some members. There are a few members up our way who will be along regards winter driving.

Welcome along! both the GS and QP are really good cars, different, but good. Plenty of owners of both on here who will drop in and give you the pros and cons to each to allow you to start comparing before you test drive. speak to Phil at PK supercars, he knows these cars inside out and has a handle on what is around north of the border since he services a lot of them, so might know a car coming up soon to suit you. Other option is come down to the Scottish Italian car day on the 29th may at carnie fruit farm, Fife for a chat with owners.
Can't comment on winter driving since most 32 owners don't drive them over the winter but know that quite a few on here use their QPs and GSs as daily drivers.

Go for the QP it is fab, handles extremely well, is practical and good looking (sounds like me!)
But I am biased

I would not worry about the winter if you put winter tyres on, the cars cope fine with snow if so equipped. Also the normally aspirated engines make the torque curves very high so the drive is very benign unless you rev it. Also the autos have an ICE setting for winter driving which is useful.

The two cars you list are very different so you need to refine that down - lots of information on here. If you search there is a guy on here in the ABZ area trying to see a DS QP.

What he said. Winter tyres and no worries.

It is, thanks. Glad it has sold too. I've seen Maseratis' in all the major Scottish cities - Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Perth, Dundee - so they are out there. I've got to go up to Inverness next month so if this stupid weather abates I will take the Maser.

Let Needamaser and I know when you are up, we might be able to meet up ;)

Snowing here at the moment which is the latest I have ever seen it. Still the forecast for next week is warm.

Apologies to OP for diversion, weather here just now quite good, but Scotland famed for being a country of micro climates - snow gates up in Aberdeenshire and sun cream in Ross-shire.......go figure. ;)

Thanks for all the replies and welcoming reception!
I do feel quite reassured now in regards to winter driving! And as my fellow Scots here have noted, we appear to still be in winter in the north! I'm actually trying to figure out whether to buy winter or summer clothes right now.
I appreciate the advice about the differences in the two cars I'm considering. I feel in the end it will come down to service and maintenance of the two types of cars and the best example of either I can get within or close to my budget.
Unfortunately, it appears the buyer I had lined up for mine is no longer responding to me and I accepted an offer I wasn't even close to entertaining a month ago, from him.
So back to the drawing board. I fear that I may have to hold onto the a6 and try again in winter when they may be more in demand!
