The Last Post - boot release fix

Found another way to access the boot when the battery is dead..............noticed my battery was getting weak, bought a new one and gave it a full charge. A few days later, tried the boot release button, absolutely nothing left in the battery. That's OK, I'll use the key to operate the manual release. Key turns but boot doesn't release. Snookered. Released the number plate light trim and could see the cable had about 20mm free play so key mechanism wasn't reaching the cable nipple. Pulled the cable with long nose pliers ...........it didn't move. Still snookered. Must find another way to supplement the power supply to the battery. Never mind all the other attempts - the final solution is under the bonnet. On the nearside mounted on the bulkhead (see photos) is a hefty red cable with a junction box to the starter motor and (I guess) the fuse panel in the passenger footwell. With the new battery I connected the jump lead (positive !!!!!) to the junction box and the negative to the engine as an earth. Pressed the boot release button and YIPPEE it opened. This method may save others the frustration I "enjoyed." I will check out the failure of the cable release mechanism and will report back.

Having found the side effects of surgery for an inguinal surgery causing discomfort with the operation of the clutch on long drives, I have sold the 4200 and bought a Mercedes CLS auto diesel. My left side is now at rest when driving.

Hope that I have contributed something towards the forum with some "how too's" and say goodbye, Dave.Power to the boot 002.jpgPower to the boot 003.jpgPower to the boot 001.jpg

All the best Dave, maybe one day you will return.

Great tip by the way, can I just ask, is it the left or right (as you look at it) red cable you connected the battery positive jump lead too?

Either !

The junction box is a kind of splitter joined by a "strip of copper" ? You can connect 12v positive to either side of those connectors. When I checked (with the dud battery) it was reading 10 volts at either point. I guess a battery cell had gone down. I was looking for the back of the starter motor for the main power lead and found this "busbar". Feel free if you want to add it to the "how to" open the boot with a flat battery.

Will view the forum from time to time as I will miss the fantastic induction roar of the V8....................although the CLS has the same torque as the 4200 but at half the engine revs.
