All very scary Bob, I see nothing from the Italians? Quite pleased that they look like they will be their usual 'Late to the table'

I do like all this tech screens but surely, from a safety angle, dashes like this are there to distract (advertise). Suppose the only way that would be aloud if the car was self drive.

As usual its a case of technology looking for a use case rather than something that people want. I can't see any reason to have this other than the manufacturers looking for a differentiator. There are lots of knocks on the MTC system but what more does it need to do?

I really hope that some manufacturers at least, please FCA don't do it, concentrate on the driving experience and providing information necessary to the person behind the wheel, rather than turn cars into mobile entertainment systems.

All this speed up of tech involvement in cars is strange. For years the car industry has neglected it - when you could get Tom toms for 100 pounds that could tell you where the local please had their breakfast- cars were atill fitted with **** systems that could take partial postcodes only.
Why are they suddenly focusing on it so much? Maybe because they realise hybrid cars are no fun to drive and they have to do something different..

I think its the advent of the smartphone and its connectivity that has accelerated this.

I must admin, having a Strad and a Range Rover, it is nice to get the full integration in the RR but I bought the Strad for the drive so not complaining.

It's also that a lot of younger people aren't that interested in cars any more. Quite a few of my 20 year old son's friends have never bothered to pass their tests whereas we couldn't wait. The driving experience is less important to them than the ability to use Spotify or have their texts read out to them.

Manufacturers have to develop cars that have smart phone like capabilities because that is what is going to be demanded from buyers going forwarded. It's also a by product of the connectivity required to produce autonomous cars which understand their surroundings.

I think I read somewhere that all this tech enhances the profit margin of cars, look at the price of a Dacia compared to a cheap Renault, underneath they are the same but the Renault will have far superior ICE/Sat Nav etc and hence the far higher price.

This is so true. I started to pay for lessons for my son but he wasn't bothered. Likewise my eldest. Only my younger daughter has the driving bug, passed her test, and runs a car. Mind you she was the maniac driver when we used to go karting. She'd just laugh when she planted it in the barriers and went faster the next lap.

If that screen stops working Maserati will charge £7k for a replacement and then someone on the forum will discover that it's made of eight Fiat 500 sat nav screens stuck together.

Will Maserati still be making cars by the time FCA adopt this? Don't tell me... it's going to be in the Alfieri.

Couldn't agree more with this. So unnecessary, tech seems to be invading everywhere, and in many cases not adding anything of use or benefit. Maybe I'm just an old curmudgeon

With driverless tech coming to the forefront it has broadened the barriers to the very concept of what a car interior is. In a fully driverless car the driver seat could rotate 180 degrees and for the car to be more of a living room... so why not add more distracting technology

In reality legislation is no where near close to allowing this.

Also enthusiasts are in the minority... hardly anyone working for the manufacturers even has any passion for cars it's just a job to them... why make cars for the 5% when all the turnover is in the 95%

That mock looks awful ...and I have a 4200 with an original centre console - aka the giant Maserati phone ;)

Jokes aside, the current trend of German manufacturers super-gluing a cheap Chinese android tablet to the front of the dashboard is hideous.
Been looking at Giulia's recently and glad Alfa have got it right. Ok, the system perhaps isn't as up to date, but it's subtle, and fits, and can be described as designed and not after thought!
