I thought I'd share my very-nothing-like-a-maserati new car. I ordered the Model S back in November and picked it up about 10 days ago (just 3 weeks after they arrived in the country). For those that don't know this is a purely electric car - there's no engine or petrol tank anywhere to be found. It's a lovely car overall, about the size of an A8 or a 7 series BMW. So for me that's very big, and very wide! Inside it's huge, having no gearstick, no transmission tunnel, and of course no engine - it's got a reasonably large boot at the front to go with the enormous one at the back.
0-60 in 4.2 seconds according to Tesla, but in the US they've timed it at 3.9s. And that's on a front-wheel drive car! The acceleration is brutal - given there's no clutch to engage, or engine to spin up - it's immediate and constant. And did I mention brutal? So it's phenomenally fast, does 250 miles on a charge in reality (that about £4 in electricity) and costs me just £600 a year to insure.
Ok so it's also pretty expensive to buy (they range from £50k to £100k depending on spec - mine was about £85k which gives me the fastest model with all the essential options and a couple of nice to have ones) and the resale values are anybody's guess in three years time. However the benefit-in-kind tax as a company car is zero this year, so I'm buying it through my company and I reckon that saves me about 40% compared with what I'd have to earn, and then pay tax on, to be able to buy the same car (that also includes the fact that the company gets 20% corporation tax back on the purchase price). Then all the accessories are the same 40% off, plus we get the VAT back on them too so they're more like half price. And accessories includes insurance, servicing, tyres, and anything else you may want for it. So overall this is like me buying a £50k personally which feels more reasonable.
Below, hopefully, are some pictures.
Cheers,
Ben.
