Swapping out GS Stereo

I had a play today with the Alpine stereo that came with my GS. Seems quite an old unit CDE - 9881. There is a separate Parrot bluetooth thing which seems to work. On the receiver, here is a connector for an iPod (old style Apple), but when I connected up my iPhone 6 (with adaptor), I got an error message on the screen and on my phone. So I started thinking that this is an opportunity to spend more money and found this (see below) which seems to have Bluetooth, CarPlay & Nav. But before I go further, I just wondered in anyone else here had installed anything like this to a GS and whether it =would fit and flip open. TIA.

Fittes something similar in an alfa 156. You can normally adjust the angle that the screen opens out to. Either slightly forwards or slightly backwards from the vertical position. The GS stereo fitting points slightly upwards in the dash so the display screen of the replacement unit will come pretty close to the heater controls. Screen angle adjustment will give you a little more room but not much.

Im sure someone that has fitted one to a GS will advise further.

I have one in my GS. An Alpine unit with the same type of flip up screen.

Screen comes up perfectly and holds at the vertical very well.

Mine has a small rubber stop afixed to the carbon surround at its top edge. This stops any rattles or damage to the rear of the screen.

As mentioned the screen is fully adjustable with a menu to adjust the open angle degree by degree.

No photos and the car is in winter storage at the moment so cant get any for you to view.

Thanks will take a look but I think the Pioneer is the only one with CarPlay. But the mechanics should be similar.

If you can find an Alpine solution, they are the best quality IMHO. I wouldn't fit anything else.

Alpine has always carried a premium price tag despite, back in the dark ages of custom stereos, their styling being a bit Marmite. The perception of quality, and hence price, was much to do with Germanic brand association rather than tangible performance benefit. In short, and how best to put this, the posers bought Alpine. Nowadays though the majority of quality units perform pretty much like any other. I wouldn't worry about choice of head unit as much as quality of amps & speakers.

You definitely need to check the screen pop out has the angle adjustment by degree described above. I bought a cheapy that was too good to be true. Unfortunately it has only 4 preset angle adjustments. The angle the stereo slides in is downwards so the required screen angle is probably 60 to 70 degrees. Therefore to work without touching the dials surround and automatically closing, the unit sits out an inch. Yuck!
After other repairs, a better and appropriately expensive stereo will be sought.

My alpine also has a fast tilt mode which moves it away from the heater switches for 10 seconds before returning to the original position.

Have found an old iPod and am going to try linking that up over the weekend. But would like to see the pictures of yours when you get the car out for the summer. Thanks
