"With the valves open it sounds much better; very sporty, a lot louder and it now has a nice line in pops and crackles. Benny said it sounded fantastic when I went past him on the motorway. On the road in sport, the sound has now got a lot harder edge to it than standard and much more volume. However, and this is the good bit, there is no resonance in the cabin and very little increase in interior volume either, until you open the windows! "

Ive had a proper look under my CC for the first time to see the sports exhaust that 1 of the previous owners had fitted...(which sounds quite nice)....all they have done is removed the back boxes.!! Would like a bit more under hard acceleration and the crackles but mrs casadalloro wouldnt fancy any louder when sensible driving say motorway run down to dublin... By the sounds of the experiment the x pipe should be ok to give both ..harder note with crackles when pushing and no more internal while cruising...... What do you guys think?

And has anyone ever looked at / fitted supersprint exhausts? Seem to do full system and parts at not crazy money and i know its top quality....

Tinman had an SM X-pipe and straight throughs. His sounded epic at standstill, but he might share what it sounded like on the move.

Personally, I would try an X, or H, pipe with your existing back boxes. For a couple of hundred quid you have the option of going back to what you have if its too much and you can then sell it on through the forum as there is a steady demand for them. Going the Supersprint way is probably going to be a fair bit more expensive. Your call.

Well guys, here is the latest installment. As some of you will have gathered by now, my exhaust is a little 'non-standard'. My Spyder is fitted with standard 4200 (Euro) manifolds, Larini 200 cell sports cats, an SM unsilenced 'X'-pipe and SM modified rear boxes. This week I had the opportunity to replace my X-pipe with an 'H'-pipe, so I did it! I shot 'before and after' videos which might show, once and for all, the differences in sound levels and tone between them. You can hear the valves being opened and closed and the difference in sound level when revved with them closed. Obviously, the sound will be different under load but it might give a flavour of the characteristics of the different configurations. I will be putting the 'H'-pipe on for Le Mans and I'll be looking to see if it is responsible for any increase in 'boominess' through the Rev range. It's best to listen through headphones with the volume screwed up full. Watch the camera bounce around, in time with your eardrums! If you have a preference, include A or B in your post and I'll reveal which is which when we have enough replies. Enjoy!

I think:

A is the H
B is the X

There isn't that much difference I think, I am sure I can hear the 'worbble' the H gives, similar to my Stag V8 that has a H

Anyway, who is next door that gets ****** off with the noise and complains!!

I rather assumed that before = X = first video, but clearly not clear. I prefer the first one.

Benny, remind me how much the modified back boxes are?

IMO, it's only worth doing on GS boxes and that's because of the valves. If you provide the GS boxes it costs about £250 to have them opened up, gutted, re-piped and closed up again. If you have standard 4200 boxes it's probably best to have straight throughs put on because of the substantial weight saving.

This is interesting. Having sat down and thought about this a lot I tend to agree with you. Having heard Marks Larini system with an 'H'-pipe it does sound more 'muscle car' than Ferrari. I reckon that's because the 'X'-pipe mixes the pulses a lot more than the 'H'-pipe which keeps the gas-flow from the two banks a lot more apart. That difference isn't too noticeable whilst revving at standstill but I'm looking forward to see if it becomes more obvious when pinned through the gears!

Ta

I'm going to get these standard boxes opened and see what's what. I nearly bougth TinMan's pipes but apart from anything else, I'm a tad worried that they'd be too loud for my regular 0500-0600 departure. Hence the desire for valves.

We shall see what we shall see

So i'm right A is the H?

I prefer video B, only slightly though. It seems to have a more crackly edge to it.

Great to hear all these videos as exhaust mods are something i will be taking on in the spring and i am finding it tough to make a decision on what is best!

I am sure we can help you make the right decision as we are getting a bit more knowledge as to what does what in various different configurations.
