I used the space-saver once. The puncture happened on the M1 on a contraflow section late at night. I was quickly picked up by a low-loader and taken to the services where I used the factory jack, the compressor and fitted the space-saver . The tyre had shredded and there was no possible way the "goo" would have repaired the leaks. The selection of replacement tyres at the services was miserable and nothing at all matching the 235/40 ZR18 remaining front tyre. We unpacked the contents of our soft bag into the spare wheel well and the wheel then fitted over the cover panel. The soft bag was folded and sat alongside my wife's feet on the way home. No problem whatsoever!

So what you're saying is that you could have just had breakdown cover and had the low loader take you home and get a proper tyre? :)

Er....no! I did have breakdown cover but you have no choice when you stop in a contraflow. The contractors pick you up and take you to a position of safety. I had the spare on and re-packed in 25 minutes (ish) so, as far as I am concerned, a great result.

Apologies for restarting an old thread. I would like a spare wheel for the reasons expressed above. If anyone has one available at a reasonable cost please pm me. If anyone could advise the wheel spacing, I could also source a generic spacesaver. Any advice welcome. Thanks.

I have an unused 4200/GS spare (complete with the required extra long bolts) you could buy off me. It's in storage but I will have the car back in April.
