I had heard the issue of stainless bolts and their strength. You don't want a wheel flying off at 180. Chroming lasts about 2 winters, then they start to go. I was charged £90 for mine to be done by Silverbronz in Alton.

I think Ill stick with the re chroming route for now. The GS is just starting to show sign of going after this winter, so they have probably already been replaced already.

Managed to get down to Classics and Chrome today to drop off my bolts for chroming (thanks again to Dave for the loan of his spares). Didn't get the guy's name, but it was interesting to speak to him again. Both the nickel and chrome plating processes are pretty much time limited from what he was saying, with little option for variation. Too much nickel and you loose the colour (goes grey) and too long in the chrome tank will just burn the surface. He spent most time talking about the prep, which is what he believes makes all the difference. Cleaning back to bare metal and belt-sanding off all burr's to leave flat / smooth surfaces. He thought the Maser' bolts would be easy to prep' well, as there are no collars or anything to contend with. Anyway, we'll see in a week or so.

I'm looking to get my wheels refurbished within the next month or so as I have slight bubbling. There is a specialist in Newcastle who takes them back to the bone and then powder coats them so they look like new. Will they be able to do my bolts at same time then? Mine have started to rust and look a mess.

Hi X1ons,

I see no reason why not. Check out their website. www.classicsandchrome.co.uk. They do a postal service. I don't think anyone on here has used them before, so let me report back once mine are done, as I wouldn't want to recommend you to them if they're not up to the job.

If all does go well, give them a call first, as their usual turnaround is about 4 weeks. If they know they need to time the chroming in with your wheel refurb', then I'm sure they'll do a quicker turnaround for you.

Alternatively you could try Northampton and Midlands Plating Company (www.nmpltd.co.uk). Several guys on here have used them and reported back favourably. They too have a postal service. I'm using C & C as they're only 20 minutes away.

Cheers, Emtee.

Thanks Emtee

if I get the wheels refurbed, can they not use the same stuff on the bolts, ie so I could get it all done at once??? Or is this a completely seperate process? Assumed it would be similar.

In advance of Emtee's reply, the 2 processes are different. In simple terms the wheels are done with a paint system whilst the bolts are plated.
Regards John - just done this job.

Hi again X1ons,

I guess they could, but I wouldn't recommend it. If they powder coat and then spray, they'll need to grind the bolts down to account for the coating thickness, and if they just spray (baked or not), then it'll be off as soon as you get a socket on them. Either way it's just way too soft.

Nickel chroming is super hard and should last a good few years with careful handling, but as mentioned above, even this will crack in time, particularly with pneumatic socket wrenches.

Cheers, Emtee.

Thanks guys. I know the system takes the wheels back the bare mteal and then builds it from there but obviously not as hard as what's required.

If it takes four weeks I may need to borrow a set in a month or so.

What's the cost to simply purchase them new?

Hi X1ons,

If you go for chroming, give both companies a call. I'm sure they'll turn them around quickly for you to tie in with your refurb.

Bolts are £14 a pop new from Eurospares! and I don't think they come chromed! You could also try David Askew for a used set.

An interesting option could be a set of wheel spacers from Formula Dynamics. Their 15mm sets come complete with extended chrome bolts. $375 per set of 2. That way you get a better stance to boot.

Cheers, Emtee.

Very nice Emtee......at this stage my bolts look like little heads of Chris Evans nestling in my wheels ...;)....so will see to this over the next few weeks whan I get back from holidays.

Just to clarify, who did did you send them to.......all details, how long did it take, £70 all in? Who currently has the spare set so I can get a timeslot?

Thanks,

P

Geart stuff Miles Childish i know but driving round for the first time with new shiny nuts gave me the same feeling when i was a kid with brand new shoes for the first time, it gives a certain smugness but then were used to that as masser owners
