Something Slightly Different! BMW Z3m coupe.

On a bit of a break from Masers, and decided to try something slightly bonkers.
I recently saw one of these at a show and fell in love. Ended up having a day trip from Edinburgh to Cornwall (dont!), resulting in the purchase of a Estoril blue bread van. I reckon this is the 3200 of bimmers! Any experience of these in the forum?

Yes! Lots of experience between my brother and I.

First of all, the ZMC is adored by BMW Fanboys, while I get the feeling that the 3200 is a bit like the ginger stepchild of the Maserati world.

Secondly, the ZMC is very well build, unlike the 3200 (with apologies to 3200 owners)

Thirdly, parts for the ZMC are widely available unlike for the 3200…

We owned a G-Power Evo ZMC for about 5yrs. It was LHD and was the first car that G-Power built to compete in the Hockenheim Tuner GP. They must have done a decent job as the car came second, only beaten by a Gemballa tuned 996 GT2…

It had a supercharged S50B32 engine making 500bhp and a 6-speed box off an E36 M3 - contrary to what they say, the 6spd box fits like a glove. Stock ZMCs are a bit too soft and snappy on the limit - ours had custom valved Bilstein coilovers. At the time they were the best, but the new KW V3/CS are even better. The braking system was updated with MovIT brakes and discs - adapters, 993Turbo front calipers and 996 rears on custom bells for 993Turbo front discs and stock BMW rears. Ours had Recaro SPG carbon seats and a Heigo rear cage as well as custom 2-piece Breyton wheels. There were tons of other mods to make the whole car work reliably like extra cooling for the diff and gearbox, lower compression pistons on stronger rods, but we are going off topic here.

My brother fancied a Dodge Viper so he bought my share out of it and sold the ZMC to import a mint Dodge Viper from Miami. We are still in touch with the current owner of the ZMC.

You didn’t say what engine yours has but two things to watch out for:

S50B32 - vanos bolts
S54B32 - conrod bearings and headgasket failure

Being a parts bin special between the E36 M3 and the E30, knowledge and spares are everywhere, and most importantly cost peanuts compared to Maserati. Last but not least, the cars don’t suffer from weird problems that Maserati sometimes do because of numbers produced and testing and development having been honed over a much longer, and cash supported period. They aren’t issue free, but the sheer amount of available knowledge out there would overwhelm you.

Heck, a full genuine BMW diagnostic software, which would also calculate and display genuine plan of action on your laptop is available for free!! You only need to buy the cable for £15. Try that with an SD3 for Maserati.

All in, they are a great and fun car to drive. Values for sure are going one way. With the potential release of a new breadvan by BMW, interest would only continue to rise. Enjoy your new toy!

Excellent, I thought there would folk out there with some experience of these cars.
Thanks for your comments, really helpful. The car is a 2000 S50. Its had replacement Vanos and features KW suspension upgrade.
I've got it booked into my local Edinburgh specialist to have a look. The chap there has already mentioned the rod bearings. Is this as much an issue with the S50 engine? Also a bit paranoid about the diff mount.

Rod bearings depend on mileage, but yeah, I would budget for a replacement if you have no proof that they have been done. You should see change of £1000 - that’s what the maximum cost including the bearings is to do them in SE London. Edinburgh should be on par if not quite a bit cheaper.

The diff mount could be an issue, but it’s not hard to stay on top of it and it’s not going to result in a written off car. Ours didn’t show any problems, and we were putting 600Nm of torque through it!

Nice one, I had one for about 2 years and loved it. Build thread here, Inc welding of the boot floor and diff mount.

Sold it as needed the cash and then 6 months later replaced it with a Gransport. Wish I could have both :)

Build Thread Z3M S50

The S50 is less prone to rod bearings, I’d say depends on mileage and service history, mine was at 88k miles but had a new short block at 59k so I didn’t worry much, what I did do was send the oil off to get it sampled and check for metallic content as some kind of peace of mind.
