A further update.....

Last week we fitted the new pads, the brakes are much less "grabby" and the squeal has gone. The culprit was definitely EBC yellow stuff front pads, which are frankly rubbish. Couldn't tell what was on the rear as there was no branding but they weren't yellow so probably not the issue. Changed them anyway, and adjusted the handbrake.

Today I found myself with the time to tackle the engine and engine bay. There were a few of the screws that hold the plastic covers missing, incorrect and rusty. So, I spent a whopping £22 on the missing ones and incorrect ones (5 screws and 4 washers) and ordered some Autoglym engine cleaner and wire and detailing brush set. Took me about 3 hours to get it looking well, including taking a wire brush to all the rusty screws and giving them a coating of black Hammerite, and sorting the large washer that holds the coolant tank, which was mainly just made of rust!

Here's some before and afters, I didn't go too crazy as I was paranoid about the electrics, coils etc. But it's much better and although nobody sees it, made me feel satisfied! Loser that I am. :) Before any one says, the rocker covers are not leaking, just years of dirt. I couldn't get the fuel line to clean up well and as I said, I didn't go too mad for fear of breaking something.

It's booked for paint in a couple of weeks and I have received the Alibaba rear quarter tridents which seem decent enough. They cost less than £10 delivered from Hong Kong, whereas the genuine Pininfarina badge that I bought as one wing is missing it, was nearly £50 !! Insane.

Brilliant! Would you like to do mine, now?

Another update on my QPV....

She's spent the last 2 weeks at the paint shop where both full sides and the boot and rear bumper have been properly painted. This was mainly to correct a series of issues with colour matches on panels which was really bad! There were at least 5 different shades of gold on it and the more I looked, the more it stood out to me. I also dealt with the usual mild wing mirror corrosion. Only the bonnet, front bumper and roof were left but all of the car has had a machine polish to get it looking as good as possible.

Finally, I put on new rear quarter badges and new Pininfarina side badges. Went for quater badges from Alibaba which look great and are of good quality. Unfortunately I couldn't get Pininfarina ones of the correct size on Alibaba so H R Owen relieved me of £92 (!!!) for them. Dick Turpin, eat your heart out.

Sticky plastics is the next job. I've bought some Isopropyl to have a crack myself as removing all of the parts is a monster job as she has rear sun blinds and all sorts that have plastic areas.

Also have some clear film for the rear arches but I'll let the paint fully cure for a while before I apply that.

Hope you like it. It's getting close to being as good as it can be without going full Wayne Carini on the restoration.

Sorry for the Iphone pics. I can't be bothered getting a proper camera out!

Good job, Athol, looking very nice.

You getting much use of it, enjoying the ride?

It's my daily but i'm not doing the mileage that I did pre-Covid, like many of us. Probably does 500 miles a month. We use our Macan mostly as there's a school run, dog walk or whatever going on and that works better for it. That's kind of why I bought the QPV, it's a fun project while i've been stuck at home.

It drives well, has a lot of history and was mechically good so the base for making it better was there. I wouldn't want to do this to one with poor history or a rotten subframe, given their value even when mint. The aim is to not lose any money so there is a ceiling to work to which helps keep my enthusiasm in check a bit (see Alibaba badges for details).

Very nice. My favorite wheels, too. And correct me if I'm wrong - but a DuoSelect model, too?

Yup it's duoselect and had a new clutch less than 5000 miles ago. I think a well set up duoselect, driven in manual mode with sport button pressed is the best one. I understand why others choose auto cars but with the duoselect, when you feel like really driving it, it's more rewarding. Besides, auto cars are more valuable as they are later and the game here is to do this on a low budget. I can't think of any car that offer more - great driving, fab sound, lots of space, grace and elegance, for anything close to the value of my QPV.

Thanks for the photos. Looks absolutely gorgeous !
Thank you for taking care of her. I expect you feel her thankyou every time you catch sight of her on your driveway.
Delighted you are getting to drive her to. That's what they are for in my view.
I may be in a minority here, but I have always thought the original Pininfarina grille suits the car particularly well. The strong horizontal lines seen just right. So I'm particularly pleased to see your car has it.
