Snapped manual handbrake cable on QP - Brakes stuck on - Any ideas how to release??

Hi guys,

I will put together a proper post about my new “project” but have been using said “project” over the past few weeks.

However tonight the manual handbrake cable (it‘s a DuoSelect) snapped so the lever is flappy/loose but the biggest problem is that the brake is “on” so I can not move the car. Luckily I can just get other cars out (1 more foot and we would be double-flucked)..

So I need to somehow get the brake cable release so I can drive the car to Lancasters. I will not be able to get a low-loader onto our drive (tried before and failed) so it can’t be picked up so need to get the handbrake release from the rear brakes…..

Any ideas????

Can you jack the car up safely and secure it on a jack stand?

There should be a central hand brake adjustment mechanism where you can slacken off the cable

If anything like the 4200 set up there is an inspection hole in the brake disk where you can fine tune the grab point for the shoes... if so adjust off to free the wheel.

If the cable has snapped the brake should have released so it’s either jammed on or it’s not the handbrake that’s stuck. Are you sure it’s in neutral? Otherwise I think you’re going to need dollies or get a wheel off.

Speak to a recovery company they deal with this sort of thing all the time.

Get some large steel 'boilerplate' 10-12mm thick to place under on the loose gravel this will allow you to jack it safely. I would have thought a failed handbrake cable would release the shoes on braking so I suspect you will find some horrors in the drum when you eventually get it off! I once moved the 4200 about 6 feet with the shoes out and in that space it ate the remaining mechanism on one side!

Yes if it’s snapped then it should be released so something is clearly not right here.

You have two options:

get under the car and undo the central pull adjuster where it splits to two cables or take the caliper a and discs off, back off the shoes via the inspection hole and hope the disc comes off the shoes.

Try the first option but it sounds like your shoes have come adrift and spun round and locked.

Update….

AA came and found that the nearside shoes had stuck against the inside of the disc. Was not possible to unwind so had to take the calliper off, open up and remove the shoes… see the attached pic.

So now handbrake is detached and have ordered rear shoes and await delivery… so can drive in the meantime as when engine off, goes into D/1,
