This got me thinking, what would happen to the value of the 3200 & 4200 if Maserati brought out a smaller car, 2-door something they could call a GranSport? Initial thought would be that many with at 3/4200 may want to buy one so quite a few of the old cars on the market, but it may also spark interest in the brand with those who like this size, which could get the market moving with new buyers who can't afford the new car...

I must be having an idle moment!

Would welcome a new small GS.....

Cant talk of the 4200 but the 3200 will appreciate as people will get to know the brand and it stands out more....

Quite a lot know something about Maserati. Driving round London, one thing I've seen a few times is a bunch of people walking past at the lights and one will look twice, point & ask a question, then you see the other person say Maserati and there's always a positive reaction. From what I've heard on here, I can't see them doing the same for the Ghibli or new QP.

If you do low annual mileages a mid to high mileage can work out well.
When I bought my Lotus Elise it was 3 years old and had a relative high mileage of 38k for 3 years old.
Sold it 8 years later with 52k and it was no longer high mileage compared to others on the market, and only lost £1k in depreciation over 8 years!
My Maserati will always be very low mileage, bought her two years ago with 11.5k, still only 13.5k miles. Could put 20k on her over the next 10 years and still low mileage. Hopefully there will be someone in the future who will pay a little more for a low mileage example, but to be honest we are not talking a lot of money compared to new cars so it doesn't really matter.

Suppose the problem is that no matter how low the 3200/4200 go they still cost a bit to run and that will alwas hit resale.....Hard to know what will happen with 3200 prices as Maserati as a rule through the 80/90's lost money like it was going out of fashion..........The 3200 was still trying to shake that off late 90's early 2000.....The QP started to make a difference and then the GT was one of the slowest depreciating cars when it came out and has really changed how the punters view Maserati...

I understand the points made but the market for a high miles Maserati is small as the price of replacing a worn it component could be a huge percentage of the cars value. I know this can happen at any stage but the chances increase as the car ages or racks up the miles.

It is less of an issue with common cars like Audi and BMW but super cars are normally owned and cherished rather than use as a daily runner...but still...some lucky people do just that.

Not quite what I meant Chris.......more its the heritage/model range/know about them in general.......no doubt they are better clued in around major/better off areas...around here, just 3 Masers in the county

Well, yes not many know of the heritage. The people who tend to do that by the way are tourists - proper Londoners are like your name-sakes, wouldn't bat an eye at a fancy car, just far too common!

In my opinion if we are talking about future resale, or current value, what does knowledge of the history etc matter? Maserati IS a "luxury" name. As a brand it has unquestionably become more desirable as a result of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio - you only need to see how many more of them are around and the reaction to them.

The result is that the brand as a whole is worth more. 3200s, 4200s, and GS's are all worth more as the brand is more desirable and there is a larger market for all of the modern Maseratis.

Attempting to look into the future and trying to guess how much a car will be worth is predicting the future and impossible. The 3200 may always be seen as the one with the best styling due to the boomerang. It may also be seen as the prototype, that was refined with the 4200 and perfected with the GS. It may not. Who knows?

What i do know is that there is no material tangible object that I have ever bought for myself that I have enjoyed more. Even when I'm leaving the house on my way to the station to go to work, I glance over at the car in the driveway and I smile.
