Screeching from front of car on take-off (MY03 4200)

Hello there,

I've got a rather annoying problem with MY03 4200 Cambiocorsa.

It's an annoying screech/grinding noise, which comes from the front of the car, started intermittent but now alot more regular. It's usually only on pull away in 1st gear but sometimes also on change to second. Just lasts a second or 2.

I thought it was worse when the steering was on full lock to the right - but now I'm not so sure.

Also think I may have heard it once at idle with the bonnet up, and think it maybe came from a pulley.

Hoping this is a known common problem and easy fix, any ideas please?

It's doing my head in cause you don't want to drive a nice sports Maser and have it making noise like a clapped out rover!

Thanks in advance.

Ah .... I reckon Elliot is spot on with his diagnosis , most likey the spiggot bearing only £16.00 but its around 6 hrs labour to fit it , so worth doing when the clutch and release bearing is changed , unless its under warranty that is ,

you have probably worked out it happens more from cold especially now that winter is here , It actually does no harm and is not detrimental to the running of the car , just rather embarrassing at times , there is now a new upgraded bearing so it should't happen any more , but the early cars were prone to this

Just a thought, check the belts too especially waterpump and steering pump oil level, plus check aircon pump isn't engaging slightly (had this on my M5) . The aircon pumps on these are rubbish and don't last forever, and can make a griding whining noise after a while.

I could well be the spigot bearing as mentioned, but the traditional sound from the spigot is more of a high pitched hoot like an owl, as I had 2 weeks ago, But had new clutch with Hills bearings fitted, lovely now.

You could try adding some waterpump lubricant to your water, if it helps, its your waterpump and will need changing, if not, do a water flush anyway to get rid of the lubricant to put her back to where you started. Try a tiny squirt of WD40 in the aircon pump, and in turn, the alternator. Won't hurt it but will lube the bearings temporarily.

Good luck

Many thanks for the responses.

The "high pitched hoot" - that's it. Guess will get it done when it need a new clutch. Good to know it's not doing any harm.

I've just had the car in the garage getting new radiator and new seals for the whole cooling system - so glad it's not a biggie.

Thanks again!

Aaaaw holy ****! Not great news at all... did I just jinx it with this thread or what - think the clutch might just have given up!

Last night car stopped driving... cambiocorsa warning light flashing, stuck in gear so wouldn't start, then eventually started, then broke down again, then got it going but stuck in 4th gear all the way home.

It had been giving an intermittent flash of the gear indicator light when in 5th and 6th.

Anyhoo - gonna need to get it into a good independent for a full service and repair $$$

Any ideas on cost to replace a clutch at an independent? Suppose could also be F1 pump? Or maybe just needs a change in gear oil (optimistic lol).

Pretty sure the dropping out from 5th 6th etc is clutch , one of the latter symptoms so my guess its slightly advanced wear, as regards cost , your looking at around the £1700 mark which will include the release and spiggot bearings ,
